Jeannette Hagestande Sprague

Sprague, Jeannette Theolyn Hagestande of Edina, died on March 14, 2010, just before her 94th birthday. She was born on March 18, 1916 to Emil and Clara Hagestande near Lake Hanska, MN. She attended public schools in Madelia, MN and graduated from there in 1933. She attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1937. Her early career as a teacher was in southwest Minnesota. She married Dale Arthur Sprague on June 9, 1942, in the midst of Dale's service in the United States Army. In 1946, when Dale returned from his tour of duty during WWII, they made their home in St. Louis Park, where they raised their family and lived for almost 44 years. Jeannette was a wonderful mother and role model for their children. During that time Jeannette used her teaching skills as a tutor and worked at St. Louis Park Schools as a substitute teacher and then a resource center coordinator for St. Louis Park High School. In 1989 they moved to 7500 York Cooperative. Both Jeannette and Dale were active with boards, committees, gardens and social activities. Jeannette and Dale resided there together for 16 years, and Jeannette remained there for another 4 years after Dale's death in 2005. Jeannette has most recently lived at Walker Elder Suites, enjoying the wonderful care of assisted living. Jeannette and Dale were members of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd from 1947 until their deaths. Jeannette and Dale mentored many young people as they grew in their faith toward confirmation and Jeannette served at one point as congregational president. She understood the legacy of church history and worked on the congregational archives committee for several years. Jeannette was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Dale; a twin sister, Margaret; and a son, Gary. She is survived by three children, Patricia (Stephen) Cina, Julianne (Richard) Omland and James ( Madelyn) Sprague. Her extended family includes 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild to arrive in April; two sisters, Charlotte Hoiosen and Ardis Grimes; Dale's sister, Jean Hall; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Foundation, Lutheran World Relief, Luther Seminary, or a charity of choice. Memorial services will be Thursday, March 18, at 11:00 am at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Avenue S., in Minneapolis. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, where her husband Dale is also interred.
