Jean TeWinkel

TeWinkel Jean TeWinkel Born Marcia Jean DeYoung on January 4, 1935, Jean was raised on a farm in southcentral Iowa with her brother and four sisters. At the age of 17, she embarked on what would be her lifelong vocation, co-teaching grades K - 8 in a two-room schoolhouse. She went on to earn a degree in Secondary Education at Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI) and a teaching certificate in Elementary Education from the College of St. Catherine (St. Paul, MN). Jean spent more than 25 years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade at Calvin Christian School (Edina, MN). The legacy that she left to her students was a love of literature, music and nature. She guided her students in creating a beautiful wildflower garden for birds and butterflies on the campus of Calvin Christian School. Jean was passionate about her hobbies including dog training, gardening, birding, traveling, and singing. One year before retiring, she contracted Multiple System Atrophy, a disease that robbed her of the chance to pursue these hobbies full-time as a retiree. Jean's tenacious and strong-willed character was as evident in her battle with MSA as it was throughout her life. She fought the disease every choke, fall, and whisper of the way. The love and care of family and friends buoyed her in this effort and brightened her days. At long last, she has surrendered and is free from the pain and worry. Praise God from-whom all blessings flow! Jean was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Wilma DeYoung; brother, Dale DeYoung; brother-in-law, George Brodsky; nephew, Merrill DeYoung; dear friend, Jan Bowman; and canine companions, Nana, Patti, Corey, Fannie and Lily. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Al TeWinkel; three daughters, Lynn (Mark Newhall), Luanne, and Leslie (Mark Edlund); granddaughter and namesake, Jeanna Edlund; sisters, Janice Brodsky, Marilyn (Marion) VanderLinden, Faye (Dave) DeJong, and Wilma (Bill) Nibbelink; sister-in-law, Mary DeYoung; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; many dear friends, and beloved dog, Maggie. Jean taught us to live every day in conscious appreciation of God's wondrous creation. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff of Struthers Parkinson's Center, Fairview Hospice, and the Jones-Harrison Residence for their support and assistance. A celebration of her life and faith will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church (70th Street & Hwy. 100, Edina) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at 11 AM, with visitation one hour prior.
