Jean Anderson

A volunteer’s volunteer, Jean gave to others the fullest measure of love for her fellow humans. In Bigfork, to her church and community. In Grand Rapids, to her church and Itasca Memorial Hospital. She organized a monthly busload of volunteers from the Grand Rapids- Hibbing area to make one on one visits to patients at the Moose Lake State Hospital. In Waseca, again her church, chair of the Waseca Seniors Citizens, hospice volunteer, meals on wheels. With Bernadette Gallagher and Jan Knudson she organized hospice volunteers in the communities of Waseca, Waterville, New Richland and Janesville. She served as volunteer coordinator for Lakeshore Inn nursing home in Waseca. Jean was the first woman president of Lakeside Country Club in Waseca. In 1984 she was awarded the Don Eustice Memorial Award for Community Service. Back in Bigfork after retirement in 1992 she served on the Board of Directors of Itasca County Hospice as well as being an active volunteer. A move to Becketwood in 2006 provided a final opportunity for service with Chaplains Jim and John at the Minneapolis Veteran’s Home. Jean died of Alzheimer’s complications on Aug. 23, 2016 at Episcopal Homes in St. Paul. She was born on July 22, 1928 in New Ulm to Irvin and Eleonora Becker. She attended schools in Marcell, Deer River, Itasca Community College in Coleraine and briefly at Macalester College. She married Dick Anderson on Dec. 28, 1948. Dick’s favorite memory is of Jean appearing at the University of Minnesota Experiment Station field days at Grand Rapids and Waseca and joining farmers for tours of the research plots. Jean’s loved five mile walks, reading, snorkeling, cross-country skiing, theater, numerous Maui trips and politics. She was Sen. Dave Durenberger’s Waseca County campaign chair and headed campaigns for Speaker of the House Rod Searle and husband Dick’s successful run for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brother James and sister Verna Stacklie(Dudley) She is survived by her husband, sons Stephen, Mark (Diane Wilson) and Paul, Grandchildren Jillian White(Abraham), Jason Anderson(Lisbeth) Kelly Anderson and two great grandchildren, sisters Marideanne Wolfe(Robert) and Ruth Blum. Memorial services will be held at St. Peder’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 4600 E. 42nd St Minneapolis at 11 A.M. Friday Sept. 9 with visitation at 10 A.M. Inurnment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the University of Minnesota Foundation, 200 Oak St. S.E. Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN. 55455 for the Dick and Jean Anderson Production Agriculture Research Fellowship at the Southern Research and Outreach Center or the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, 350 N.W. 1st Ave. Suite E, Grand Rapids, MN. 55744 for the Jeff Davies Scholarship for the Arts at Itasca Community College in honor of a favorite instructor.
