Janice Reimer Derksen

Janice Reimer Derksen, born in Hutchinson, Kansas on January 16, 1939, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on February 28, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and friends. At the time of her death, Janice resided in Eagan, Minnesota. At the age of fourteen, she won a national piano competition and had the honor of being the first person ever allowed to perform on Liberace's grand piano, to a packed stadium. While attending Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, she met and married Stan Pankratz. Together they spent time with Mennonite Voluntary Service in the rural mountains outside of Mexico City, working with indigenous villages to advance agricultural productivity. After two years, they returned to the family farm in Mountain Lake, Minnesota to raise a family. Janice's family was a source of joy and pride. She adored her parents, Alvin and Elizabeth Reimer, who instilled in her the values of kindness, compassion, and perseverance. She maintained a close relationship with her sister, Judy Folsom, and brother, Jon Reimer, throughout her life. Janice's sons, Michael and Chris, together with Chris' wife Hannah, brought much happiness into her life. Her grandsons, Cooper and Hudson, were the light of her later years, and she delighted in watching them grow and thrive. She was preceded in death by Tom Clayton, her partner and companion of 29 years. Her passion for music motivated her to achieve a Master's Degree in Fine Arts with a primary focus on Organ Performance at the University of Minnesota. She was employed by Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in the music department where she was able to use her skill, talent, and degree for many years. Janice's love for gardening brought color and life to her surroundings, and she took great pride in her bountiful garden. She had a keen eye for beauty and found inspiration in the world around her. Her home was a reflection of her eclectic tastes, filled with art, antiques, and treasures collected from her travels. Janice will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Saturday, May 25 at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403. Visitation begins at 10:00 am, Celebration of Life at 11:00 am with Reception to follow. Memorial gifts in Janice's name may be made to the music program at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church.
