Jan R. Kirst

Kirst, Jan Robert Born July 10, 1954, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI and grew up in Nekoosa, WI. Died unexpectedly May 15, 2013, in Minneapolis, MN. Survived by his mother Jean M., Eau Claire WI; brother Jeffrey, Eden Prairie, MN, sister Jaci McCune, Eau Claire (sons Dirk, Heath, Wayne), brother Joseph (Nancy), Eau Claire, and brother James, Onalaska, WI; aunts and uncles Jere Kirst (Beverly), Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Jack Staege, Spencer, WI, Donna Scheunemann, Wisconsin Rapids, Earl Staege, Wisconsin Rapids, Paul Staege (Gail), Hancock, WI and numerous cousins. Preceded in death by his father John A. Kirst (9-4-2012), paternal grandparents John and Julia Kirst, maternal grandparents Leslie and Alice Staege, and uncles Dale Staege and Milton Staege. Graduated from Nekoosa High School 1972, Student Council and Class President 1971 and 1972, graduated from University of Wisconsin Stout 1976 with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Employed by Carlson Companies (1977-2012) in various capacities and locations around the world, including Sydney, Australia for eight years as well as Singapore for two years. Jan was a world traveler; there were very few places in the world where he had not visited. He had many varied passions including stamps, post cards, magazines and taking many pictures. His positive energy and big smile made him so easy to be around and brought creativity to many family gatherings. His high energy level and self motivation were fun to try to keep with up at times; but it was always worth the effort to be with Jan. Jan loved going to museums and being in big cities, but also constantly thought about his home town of Nekoosa and its history. If you were at an event that you may have not wanted to participate in, Jan was always the one with the energy and enthusiasm to make it worth getting involved, enjoying the experience, and making it memorable. Jan had a great sense of humor and ability to laugh at himself, of which his siblings also took advantage, but with always the best intentions. Jan was a good sport and if he didn't know how to do something, he would always give it a great effort and find the humor in it.
