James Norbert Steinhagen

James Norbert Steinhagen (Jim) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, left the life he'd fully lived and loved on September 19, 2023. He was 92. Jim was born in Minneapolis on May 14, 1931, to Leola and Henry Steinhagen. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Ellen Wright, and they raised seven wonderful children together. Later in life, Jim married Diane Cline with whom he shared a love of travel, fine foods, and heart-to-heart conversations over lingering candlelit dinners. Jim was proud to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. One of the "Chosin Few", Jim was seriously injured at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Many years later, his wartime experience propelled Jim to become a champion for peace and social justice, volunteering with the Minneapolis chapter of Veterans for Peace (VFP Chapter 27). After a long career at Northwestern Bell, Jim retired and traveled the world in a second career with Business Incentives. He often extended trips to enjoy personal travel with his children. He loved adventure, seeing new places, and meeting people. Jim will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind, including his sister Phyllis Dosch (Tom) and family; children Linda Hendlin (Gary), Jane (Jim Peterson), Jim (Lynae), Mary (Jim Newton), Tom (Siri Johnson), Cathy, John (Vickie); grandchildren Christopher Hendlin (Sindhu Carlson), Alyssa Hendlin, Joshua Hendlin (Lara), Rebecca Hendlin (Mark Schneider), Britta Jicks (Bob), Peter Peterson (Jena), Daniel Peterson (Christin), Joseph Peterson (Erika Bocklund), Elizabeth Peterson, Zachary Newton (Chloé le Comte), Grace Steinhagen, Tara McGregor (TJ), Carter Steinhagen, Nia Steinhagen; 23 great grandchildren; and Diane's children Tracy Cronin (Mike), Julia Roessler (Kent), and Matthew Cline. Jim is preceded in death by his parents; Jeanne Wright Steinhagen, (July 28, 2020); and Diane Steinhagen (August 23, 2023). A Celebration of Life and sharing of memories will be held on Wednesday, November 1 at 2PM at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 5000 West 50th St, Edina, MN 55436. There will be time to visit an hour before the service, and a reception will follow. A private burial will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Veterans for Peace (VFP) Chapter 27 (www.vfpchapter27.org).
