James Frank Schluck

James, "Jim" Frank Schluck, 82, of Chanhassen, Minnesota, passed away December 1st, 2022, surrounded by family following a courageous 8 month battle with cancer. Jim was born January 11th, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1958. Jim was a goalie on the Roosevelt Teddies state tournament hockey team. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from St. Cloud State University, in St. Cloud,Minnesota. On August 1st, 1964 he married his high school sweetheart, Claudette Gaylord. Jim and Claudette built a home on Lake Lucy in Chanhassen, Minnesota where they've been long time residents for 54 years. Jim was an art teacher in the Hopkins School District for 34 years. He taught at North Junior High, West Junior High, and Lindberg High School. He had said, "There was never a day where I didn't want to go to work." He was proud of being an art teacher and being the inaugural girl's softball coach for Hopkins Schools. A group of girls approached Jim to be their softball coach, and the rest was history, including state tournament participation. Spending family time with Claudette, and sons, Jon and Steve, was a top priority. Traveling was one of his favorite ways to be together. There was the trip to Europe, which included visiting some of the same destinations as 30 years earlier with Claudette and his folks. Jim also had his favorite vacation locations. During the summer months, it was spending time at the condo at Breezy Point Resort. During the coldest winter months after retirement, it was escaping to Mariners Cove in Naples, Florida. He was often joined at these locations by family and friends. Jim kept busy with many past times. Fishing brought such joy to his life. Whether it was trolling the waters of Lake Lucy with his fishing buddies or heading up north with the teachers' group, life was about as good as it could get. He was a Minnesota sports fan through and through. His daily plans almost always took into consideration what game was being played and when. He enjoyed youth sports just the same. Both as a coach and as a spectator. Jim liked the comradery involved with group activities; whether it be poker groups, Great Books Club, investors club, or hosting cook outs and fish fries. He was a proud Grandpa to Kyle, Mik, Ella and Tristan. Jim always looked forward to their sports, activities, events, and talents. The go to card game with Grandpa Jim was playing Do-Do On Your Neighbor for quarters. Jim Schluck was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a friend to everyone, made people laugh, and known as a good man. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claudette; sons, Jon Schluck and Steve (Rocio) Schluck; brother, Warren (Marlys) Schluck; grandchildren, Kyle (Katherine) Kauma, Mikaela (Josh) Rands, Ella Schluck, and Tristan Rooney; nieces, nephews, and many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Minnie Schluck; and sister, Patricia Niznick. A celebration of life service will be held on January 11th at The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, 3675 Arboretum Dr, Chaska, MN, 55318. (612) 624-2200. Entry fees are waved for guests attending this event. Visitation at 11AM, service at 12PM, followed by a lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church.
