Jack L. Puterbaugh

Puterbaugh, Jacob L. (Jack) Who rode in the Dallas motorcade when JFK was assassinated passed away March 16, 2015 in peace and the comfort of his home. Jack was born in Minneapolis on November 17, 1925. His family relocated to a farm in Isanti County in 1932. His early education occurred in a one-room school. He later attended Cambridge H.S., where he graduated in 1943. After graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps. He was training as a crew member on B29's when WWII ended. After the war, Jack married the former Marvelle Johnson, and started a family. Benefitting from the GI Bill, he attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1948 with a BS degree in natural science. He then embarked on a teaching career in rural Minnesota and also became interested in politics. The family moved to Minneapolis where he became a full-time staff member of the DFL in the early 50s. In 1957, he was appointed by Governor Orville Freeman to serve as State Liquor Control Commissioner, a post he held until 1961. After leaving this post, he worked briefly as a private investigator before obtaining a position in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1962, he and his family relocated to Kensington, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC. While employed at USDA, Jack was detailed to perform advance preparation work for President Kennedy's fateful visit to Dallas on November 22, 1963. He was riding in one of the lead cars in the motorcade when the assassination occurred. His vehicle was being driven by a Secret Service agent and was among those that raced to the Parkland Hospital in escort of the stricken President. Jack remained employed by the Department of Agriculture until 1972, when he and his wife and young daughter relocated to a farmstead near Stanchfield, MN. During his years in Stanchfield, he worked as a part-time teacher at Braham H.S. and was the Zoning Administrator for Isanti County. Jack retired in 1987, when he and his wife relocated to St. Paul, where they served as volunteers in local charities. Several years after his wife's death in 1993, he relocated to Isanti, MN, where he was a regular contributor of essays recounting local history that were published in the Isanti County News. In 2012, he moved to Walker Place in Minneapolis in order to be near to his daughter and other family members. Preceded in death by wife, Marvelle and infant granddaughter, Laila. His brother Karl, of Eagan, MN, passed away March 22, 2015. He is survived by son Steven (Jan Gulledge), of Springfield, VA, son Gregory (Sandy), of Hanover, PA, daughter Carrie (Eric Biese), of Minneapolis, and three grandchildren (Kurt, Luke, and Sonya). He is also survived by his dear friend, Ms. Jeane Fullerton, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Memorial service 10 AM Friday, May 1 at Stanchfield Baptist Church, 38850 Stanchfield Road NE, Stanchfield, MN. Visitation from 9:30 AM until time of service at the church. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 1:45 PM Friday. Meet at assembly area # 2. Celebration of Jack's life at Gilda's Club- Twin Cities from 3-5 PM on May 1st, 10560 Wayzata Blvd., Minnetonka.
