Hans Paul Wanzenried

Hans was born on February 25, 1931, to Jakob and Berta Wanzenried in Uzwil, Switzerland, both of whom were tenant farmers, and grew up with his two younger brothers, Fritz and Walter, in a humble house with no plumbing or electricity. As a teen, during the second world war, they lived at Lake Constance on the border of Germany, where Nazi Germany could be seen across the lake - his father worked at the Swiss Army border during the war, and these were scary times for the family. After the war, when he was 15 years old, he left home to begin an apprenticeship in a flour mill, which he eventually grew into a 42 year career working for Buhler, Inc. an international manufacturing equipment business that included milling equipment. His career gave the opportunity, at 22 years old, to travel to South Africa, where he taught himself English and met the love of his life, Luciana Bonollo. The two were married on May 19, 1956, and shortly thereafter, moved back to Uzwil, where they welcomed their first son, Andre, a year later. Hans' work then took the family to Winnipeg, Canada, and to Grand Forks, ND, where they welcomed their second son, Roland. In addition to work and his family, Hans played the accordion as a child and later took up woodcarving and traveling around Europe, Australia, and the US with Luciana. He enjoyed reading, Swiss folk music and visiting Switzerland as often as he could, attending church, spending time with family, and watching Lawrence Welk on TV. Hans and Luciana were married for 63 years before she passed on August 8th, 2019. Hans is also preceded in death by his father, Jakob, his mother, Berta, and his brother, Fritz. In addition to his two sons, Andre and Roland, Hans is survived by his brother Walter (Martine), son Andre (Valerie), and son Roland (Brenda). As well as 5 grandchildren: Jakob Wanzenried (Marni), Samuel Wanzenried (Laken), Anni Wanzenried, Christianna Becker (John Michael) and Elyse Wanzenried (Adam). And 3 great grandchildren: Rocco, Gianna and Lianna Wanzenried. There is a memorial service planned in the spring for the family.
