Gregory Gerald Sorensen

Our dear Greg, father and husband, passed away in loving arms in his home on February 12th at the age of 62¬. Greg certainly fit his name - he was gregarious and fun loving, always quick with a corny joke and a big smile. When he teased, he would declare that he only teased those he loved. His hugs were warm and powerful. A close second to his huge love was his determination and work ethic. Greg graduated as valedictorian from Central High School in Paddock Lake, Wisconsin. He then double majored in MIS and accounting at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. Greg finished in four years while working full time as an intern his last year and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Greg met his wife Julie in ballroom dance class during his last semester in college where he danced his way into her heart. His sense of rhythm brought energy to all those on the dance floor with him. After college he moved to Oregon to work for Andersen Consulting. Greg and Julie were married on July 18th, 1987 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. They spent two years in Portland, Oregon together before moving back to Minneapolis, Minnesota to be closer to family. By April of the next year, his first son Blake was born. Greg contracted the building of his home in Chanhassen where he lived with his family the past 34 years. He painted the whole interior of the house himself, and with the help of his dad completed all of the woodwork as well. During the construction, a carpenter commented, "What are you going to do with this big place? Fill it with kids?" He was again richly blessed with three more children: Jessica, Nicholas, and Jared. To support his family, Greg pursued a career in IT management. He was dedicated to his profession and often worked long, hard hours. Throughout his career, he worked for Tsumura International, Department 56, US BioEnergy, and Gradient Resources. Most recently, he was the CIO of Scott County where he worked until two weeks before his death. He was truly passionate about his career and gave his all right up to the very end. Outside of work, Greg enjoyed many fun-filled trips with his family. When the kids were growing up, each year they would spend a week in June in Eagle River, Wisconsin at a timeshare with Greg's parents and the week of the 4th of July with Julie's family on the beach in Fontana, Wisconsin. They made many happy memories boating, fishing, swimming, and spending time with their extended family. He also took his family on camping trips to the Black Hills in South Dakota, Colorado, Yellowstone National Park and the North Shore in Minnesota. Greg also took his family on several magical trips Disney World over the years. Making memories with his family was very important to Greg. Holidays were Greg's time to shine. He enjoyed cooking and decorating for those special days. For summer holidays, his specialties were 4 bean casserole, potato salad, and grilling. At Thanksgiving, he would always cook the perfect turkey, and at Christmas he made Swedish meatballs and shopped for hors d'oeuvres. He was very particular when it came to selecting the perfect Christmas tree and took great pride in covering the tree with hundreds of lights. Greg was a Diet Coke enthusiast and an avid Nordic skier. He first participated in the American Birkebeiner in 2012 where he skied the Birkie Classic. In total, he completed the Birkie Classic nine times with his best finish coming in 2019 when he placed 96th overall and 5th in his age group. He loved skiing and was hoping to ski the Birkie into his 80s and beyond. More than anything, Greg wanted to keep on living. Even before he had children, he said that he was looking forward to becoming a grandfather. He deeply loved his four grandchildren and was looking forward to watching them grow. Family gatherings won't be quite the same without his booming voice and wonderful laugh. We will feel his love in our hearts forever, and he will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Kay Sorensen. He is survived by his wife Julie, his four children, Blake (Stephanie), Jessica (Kevin) Brian, Nicholas, and Jared, and his four grandchildren, Abraham, Ashton, Joel, and Alma. Visitation will be held at 9:30am on Saturday February 22nd with funeral mass to follow at 11am at St. Victoria Catholic Church (8228 Victoria Dr, Victoria, MN 55386). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mayo Clinic- Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Research Program (Donate to Mayo Clinic).
