Glen Reed

Reed Glen A. Reed, age 72, of Bloomington, died Thursday, Oct. 28 from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was born in Superior, WI and graduated from Superior Central High School in 1950. He graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Education in 1954 where he was a 3-year letterman on the University of Minnesota Basketball Team, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, the Student M Club President, and an Officer in the NROTC. He served in the Navy from 1954-56, as Lt. JG-Supply Officer on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. He returned to the University of Minnesota in 1956 as Assistant Basketball and Baseball Coach. In 1963, he became the University of Minnesota Assistant Athletic Director, where he felt his greatest accomplishments were mentoring student athletes. During his athletic administrative career, Glen was the color commentator at WTCN Channel 11 for the Minnesota High School Basketball and Hockey Tournaments. He left the U of M in 1972 and became co-owner and partner of Water Products Company, Eden Prairie, MN, a municipal and contractor pipe, valve, and fitting distributor. He retired from Water Products Company in 1985. During his career, he was inducted into the Superior Athletic Hall of Fame, served as Chairman of the Sports & Attractions Committee of the Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, Committee Chairman for the United States Pan American Trials, held at the University of Minnesota in 1968, and a member and chairperson of a number of industry organizations. He also served as a Presbyterian Elder at his church. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Edina, MN. In retirement, he had time to pursue his interests of attending sporting events, travel, music, church, golf and tennis, and spending time with family and friends at their lake home in Wisconsin. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruth (Holmberg) Reed; son, Steve (Julie), Eden Prairie, MN, their sons Tony and Evan; son, Douglas (Patsy), Naperville, IL, their daughter Lauren and son Eric; sister, Marilyn Merino, Golden Valley, MN. The family wishes to thank the staff of Struthers Parkinson's Center and the staff on D3 at the Minnesota Masonic Home for their compassionate and loving care. Memorials are preferred to Struthers Parkinson's Center, or University of Minnesota Medical Foundation - Parkinson's Research.
