Dr. Gilson Vieralves

Vieiralves, Dr. Gilson of Bloomington, MN, passed away after a brief battle with metastatic cancer on Sept 1st 2016. He is survived by his "sweetheart" of 62 years and 11 months, Helen, three daughters - Deborah, Barbara (Michael), Cynthia (David), 5 grandchildren - Emily, Katie, Anika, Dylan and Tess and great grandson Kai. He was preceded in death by his parents, many siblings and son Gilson Jr. Gilson Vieiralves was born in Manaus, Amazonas Brazil on Sept 13th 1924 to Isaias and Olivia Vieiralves. He was raised in Manaus along with 12 surviving siblings until the age of 14 when he moved to Rio de Janeiro to complete his secondary education. He was accepted into the University of Brasil in Rio de Janeiro medical school. Gilson came to the United States where he completed his residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Kansas City Missouri. Where he met his wife Helen; they were introduced through a mutual friend; because he wanted to date the nurse with the pretty green eyes but he missed their 1st date because he had the wrong address. Some groveling was required before attempting another date which was more successful since he made it. After a short courtship but long engagement - they were married on September 13, 1953 in Manaus. Daughters Deborah and Cynthia were born in Manaus. And in between, daughter Barbara was born in Kansas City. In 1960, Gilson started his quest to become an urologist, after passing his medical state boards; he was asked to come to Minnesota. While flying over the state, he declared Minnesota to be "God's Country", the family moved from Kansas and arrived in Winona on a nice, brisk, chilly, sub-zero day in January 1970. He worked at the Winona Clinic before going into solo practice. He retired in 1984 and chose to continue working locum tenens in Brazil and throughout the Midwest for a few years. He moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida with his wife Helen; where they resided until May 2015, when his Lewy Body dementia started to get worse. In July of 2016 he was diagnosed with metastatic cancer and was moved to Walker Care Suites in Edina, where he passed away in the early morning of September 1st. We would like to thank the Fairview Hospice team for their help in his final months; particularly Julia P, his case manager, Kathy and Marni from Visiting Angels, who helped care for him prior to his move to Walker. We also want to thank the following people at Walker Care Suites Mohan Latchman, Garmai Sumo & Dorcas Poku; their kindness and vigilance in caring for our father is very much appreciated, particularly GG who stayed and frequently checked in on us as he fought not to leave. Dr. Vieiralves has been cremated per his wishes and a memorial service will be held at Washburn McReavy Chapel in Eden Prairie on Saturday, September 24th. Services begin at 1 o'clock p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to the Catholic Relief Services in his memory.
