Gerald Cyril Schatzlein

Gerald "Jerry" Schatzlein, Age 100, of Lakeville, passed away May 13, 2023. Jerry was born October 14, 1922 at home on Harriet Ave S, Mpls to Emil and Catherine Schatzlein. As a boy, he swam at Lake Harriet, played at the many parks and just enjoyed childhood adventures with his best friend John. As a young man, he had jobs such as; changing oil at the corner gas station, or he ran errands for Barth jewelers' downtown Mpls. During World War II, he served in the Army in the Pacific theater in Guam and the Philippines. Even though it was tough at times, he always said he was the lucky one, he got to go home. After he returned home, he and John attended dances in Minnetonka, and at one of those dances he met Millie Zimpel, who he married and raised eight children in S.Mpls. When he came back from the war he worked at his father's business on W. Lake St, Schatzlein Saddle Shop. He liked to say he was the last harness maker in Mpls. He and Millie became owners after his father's death, and made it into a vibrant saddle, tack, repair shop that sold boots, hats and western wear in the heart of the city. Still to this day, people mention how their parents bought square dancing outfits, or where they bought their first pair of boots or saddle. Millie passed away in '72. Six of his children worked there and became 3rd generation owners, along with varied family and friends working there throughout the years. The Shop closed in 2022 after 115 years. Jerry married Ruth Fauble in '73 and the next 37 years enjoyed living in the warmer states. Moving back to MN after Ruth's death, he enjoyed time with family, especially those Bingo games at gatherings. He celebrated his 100th Birthday with many family and friends. He is known for his "stay positive" attitude, keeping a well decorated and orderly house, making his bed every day, and playing cards until his passing. Don't forget about those wiggling ears, "Forward March!" As he would say "it's his job to make you laugh". Jerry is preceded in death by his wives; daughter; Carol; siblings; Loretta, Leo, Gertrude, Florence, Wally, Tom, Ed, Kay, Mary; and grandson Jason. He is survived by children: Linda(Owen) Ashland, Peggy, Janet, Diane(Duane) Bohn, Gary(Sally),Paul(Cathy Barsamian), Judy((David) Stricker, Joan West; grandchildren Michelle, Stephanie(Josh), Jennifer, Suzanne(Jake), David(Holly), Nicole(Adam), Tom, Jacob, Sarah(Jon McHugh), John, Cody, Samantha, and Matthew; 4 great grandchildren; stepchildren: (Kim decd), Gordy, Mary, Jim, Ruthan, and 9 step grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephew. Funeral service Wednesday, May 24 at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to service at Washburn McReavy Funeral Chapel, 2300 W.Old Shakopee Rd, Bloomington. Interment following at Fort Snelling.
