George McNair Stillman

Stillman, George McNair Age 98, passed away on July 29 at Friendship Village of Bloomington. George lived a full life spanning almost 99 years, and he was dearly loved by his family and his many friends. He had a friendly smile and a warm greeting for everyone, always ready to talk and share his infectious sense of humor. George was born in St. Paul on Sept. 23, 1922, and he grew up in Duluth and Minneapolis. He attended West High, the University of Minnesota, and Yale University. As World War II was beginning, George was turned away by the Army for health reasons; undeterred, he joined the American Field Service and served in an ambulance corps in France and Italy. After the war, George married Charlene Frances Hoch of Duluth, and they had three sons: George Jr., Tom, and Mark. George was a dedicated husband and father, always concerned about the well-being of his family. For most of his career, George worked in marketing for the Green Giant Company and its successors. George was an avid and talented golfer, and he relished his time with his golf buddies. After Char was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1997, George remained at her side until her passing late that year. Later in life, George and the late Helen McNulty became regular companions (a development Char would have cheered), sharing their wit and enjoying their many mutual friends. George will be remembered as a kind, genial soul who was always ready to smile, laugh, and engage with family, friends, and just about anyone he encountered. Preceded in death by his parents, George H. Stillman and Isabelle M. Stillman (née McNair); his sister, Nancy Stillman Frawley; and his beloved wife of 48 years, Charlene. Survived by his sons, George Jr., Tom (Mary), and Mark; grandchildren Jake, Ben, John, Isabelle, and Anna Stillman; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. George's family expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Friendship Village staff and the Park Nicollet hospice team, who provided extraordinary care, coupled with genuine affection, over the last years of George's life. A memorial service will be held at Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel at 10 A.M. Saturday, August 21, with visitation starting at 9:30.
