Gary Holstrom

Holstrom, Gary Age 84, beloved husband, father, papa, and great-papa, passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 after a short illness. Gary was born June 15, 1933 to Everett and Dorothy (Ludford) Holstrom. He grew up in Richfield and graduated from Washburn High School in 1951. While serving in the Army from 1954-56, he and Diane lived in Orleans, France, and enjoyed the greatest adventure in their life. Gary graduated from the University of Minnesota with a journalism degree in 1958 and started working in the advertising department for Dayton's Department Store. Later he started his own advertising agency, Masters and Associates. He had a wonderful way with words and was full of creative ideas which made him very successful at his craft. After he retired and with his love for nature and history, he and Diane traveled all over the United States and Europe visiting the beautiful scenery and historic sites. But his favorite spot to go was the cabin on Lake Sylvia in Annandale which they owned for over 30 years. Gary had a great sense of humor and told jokes to everyone he met. He cherished his family's many gatherings. Gary was a life-long Minnesota sports fan, both cursing and cheering the teams on. He relished fun parties with good friends. He was a soft touch for family members who could count on his advice and help. He loved every day to watch the sunset. Survived by wife of 62 years, Diane, daughters Susan (Paul) Johnson of Alexandria, Cindy (Mark Schultz) Holstrom of Los Altos, CA, and Jill (Dan) Dauth of Edina and son Steven Holstrom of Richfield, 9 grandchildren & spouses, 6 great-grandchildren, sister Cheryl Pohl of Chicago, sisters-in-law Norma (Howard) Moon and Sharon Gray, many nieces and nephews, and his childhood buddy, Wes Scott of Richfield. Preceded by his parents and sister Marilyn. Memorials may be given to Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness (friends-bwca.org) or donor's preference.
