Freddie Solum

Freddie Solum died peacefully on July 8, 2024 after an eight month battle with cancer, a battle no child should have to fight but one he fought with courage and grace throughout. Freddie was born January 3, 2019 in Minneapolis to Mike and Lauren Solum and from an early age displayed a quiet kindness and calm disposition well beyond his years. His early days were filled with love for his dog (Murphy), starting his collection of stuffed ducks, learning bravery at local parks, beginning lasting friendships at The Gardner School, and accompanying his parents on adventures across the country. He would also develop a remarkable ability to make those around him laugh - with his limited vocabulary and his funny expressions, alike. He made the world a better place. In April of 2021, Hattie - the love of Freddie's life and forever best friend - joined the world and his existence was made whole. The two quickly developed an undeniable bond only siblings can experience and Freddie made protecting his little sister an instinctual life mission. He would teach Hattie about dogs, friendship, sports, toys, music and cartoons. They shared mutual enjoyment dancing to Whitney Houston and Taylor Swift; and watching Bluey, Peppa Pig, princesses and super heroes - Freddie's favorites rotating between Spider Man, Iron Man and Leonardo the ninja turtle. Their connection now forever established through an invisible string and a walkie talkie. Freddie's life will always feel too brief, but those closest to him remain comforted by the quality of his years far outweighing the quantity. And while his last several months were filled with constant challenges and persistent battles, his resolve and humility will forever be a playbook for overcoming adversity. Freddie remains incredibly loved on planet Earth by his two ultra proud parents, Mike and Lauren; his best friend and sister Hattie; his grandpa and grandma Brian and Tracy (Westhoff); his papa and nana Rick and Nancy (Solum); his uncles Peter (Starenko), Tom (Solum) and Jack (Westhoff); his aunts Stef (Solum), Steph (Alfonso) and Rachel (Timmerman); his great grandma Shirley (Sandin); his extended family; his doctors and nurses at Children's Minnesota and Children's Colorado; and his many friends of all ages. Plans for a celebration of Freddie's amazing life are in progress, will be open to all who knew or knew of Freddie, and will be shared soon. Also in development are plans to cement Freddie's desired legacy of helping kids going through tough medical challenges - fulfilling a promise made with his parents shortly before his passing.
