Frank William Schadewald, Junior

Frank William Schadewald, Jr. was born on April 26, 1937, to Frank and Hattie Schadewald and grew up as the youngest of eight children in the close-knit German-American community of Northeast Minneapolis. After graduating from the Vocational High School in 1955, Frank joined the U.S. Coast Guard. His military service brought adventure, allowed him to see the world, and sparked a lifelong passion for boats. He was a proud veteran. Frank attended the University of Minnesota and began a distinguished career in engineering and technology. He later returned to school to earn an MBA from the University of St. Thomas. His persistence was reflected in the nine U.S. patents bearing his name. Family was the central joy of Frank's life. After meeting his beloved wife, Phyllis, on a blind date, the two built a rich life together and recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. They enjoyed familiar neighborhood restaurants, attending cultural events, and especially treasured the fellowship and camaraderie of the couples club at Holy Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Frank loved his children, Paul and Rachel, and supported them unconditionally. Paul remembers a father who encouraged his interests and inspired a lifelong love of learning. Rachel's childhood was filled with recitals, marching band performances, and countless moments with her father. Each Christmas, Frank's ever-growing snow village became a beloved family tradition and the backdrop for holiday gatherings. Frank warmly embraced Paul's wife, Cari, and Rachel's husband, Dan, like his own children, and loved his extended family. Nothing brought him greater pride than his grandsons, Ethan and Kyle, whether attending their soccer games, school or church activities or seeing them at family events. He was looking forward to Kyle's upcoming marriage to Trista. Frank enjoyed nurturing a community in his own neighborhood. During winter, Frank plowed neighbors' driveways, and during the summer, he tended to his flowers and continually devised creative ways to feed the birds in their ongoing battle with the squirrels. Faith was the foundation of Frank's life. His trust in Jesus sustained him through both joyful seasons and difficult ones. He found a welcoming church family at Cross View. Frank lived his faith through friendliness and kindness to others and his devotion to learning. In his final weeks, he asked for his well-worn study Bible and found comfort in listening to Scriptures and hymns. Frank entered his heavenly rest on July 9, 2026. His family, friends, neighbors, and church community are deeply grateful for his 89 years and for the ways he encouraged, supported, and inspired those around him. We rejoice in the promise that he is now with his Savior, reunited with his beloved daughter Rachel and with the family and friends who have gone before him. His example of faith, persistence, and kindness will continue to live on in all who knew him.
