Frances Ann Thompson Johnston

Johnston, Frances Ann (Thompson) 80 of Edina, MN, passed away at home after a short battle with cancer surrounded by her beloveds on July 29, 2008. She was born at the gateway to the Appalachians in eastern Pennsylvania on January 5, 1928, and earned her B.A in Journalism/Drama from Chatham College (University) in 1950. Ann went on to work as an assistant manager in advertising in Pittsburgh, PA, and also for the C.I.A in Washington, D. C. before retiring to raise her four children. She helped found the Edina Community Theater, as well as, the 42nd Street Players where she remained as a producer for many wonderful shows before opting for a "front row seat" in theaters all over the Twin Cities right up until her illness this May. She was an expert gourmet cook, a lover of parties, a passionate gardener, an avid reader, and a compassionate lover of animals of all kinds, especially cats. She adopted a giraffe two years ago and donated to charities of all kinds for the protection of what she considered to be all God's creatures. She traveled extensively with her husband, together experiencing many marvelous adventures from the crossing of the Masai Mara to climbing the tombs of Petra, Jordan. She loved life and embraced all cultures and made sure she laughed every day of her life. Until the very end, her spirit could not be broken. She was preceded in death by her parents; Joseph and Helen Thompson of Florida. She is survived by her loving husband; William (Bill) of almost 58 years, sons; Michael and his wife Tammy; William (Kyle); daughters; Aimee and Andrea Johnston; grandchildren; Alisan, Nathan, Kyle and Karina; brothers; Joe (Tug) Thompson of Florida, Peter and sister-in-law Peggy Thompson of Pennsylvania, many nieces and nephews from all over the country, and her beloved cats McCavity and Haley. Ann had so many friends they are too numerous to count, but she was admired and greatly loved by many. A light has gone out of our lives, Mom, you are loved beyond all words. Until the day we are reunited, you will be missed, honored and remembered forever. There will be no visitation. The Memorial Service will be held at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel (Minneapolis) on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 2 PM. A celebration of her life will immediately follow the service.
