Evelyn Tart "Evie" Struthers

Struthers, Evelyn Tart "Evie" Age 97, of Minneapolis, passed away with her family at her bedside at Methodist Hospital on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. She was the grand matriarch of the family and was much loved by all. She will be greatly missed. Evie was born in Dunn, North Carolina, on February 25, 1916, to Rupert and Viola Tart and was one of five children. She graduated from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and then taught physical education for several years in Evansville, Indiana. She met the love of her life, Alan Struthers, there. They married in 1940 and moved to Alan's hometown of Minneapolis. During the war, they moved from place to place as Alan's work for the FBI required. After the war, Evie and Alan returned to Minneapolis, where Evie was active in the community for many years. Due to her and Alan's generosity, the free-standing facility called the Struthers Parkinson's Center was made possible. Evie remained involved with the center until the end of her life, and for many years was a regular volunteer there. The nametag she wore there said simply "Evie." A lover of dance, she was a founding member of the Friends of the Minnesota Dance Company. She was also a founding member of HAGS (Housewives Amalgamated Growth Stocks) investment club, where she was a pivotal member, always coming to meetings prepared with the latest stock information and recommendations. She lived in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis for over 34 years. She was a longtime member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the educational philanthropic group PEO, The Woman's Club of Minneapolis and Interlachen Country Club, where she was a member of the 9-holers and chair of the women's golf rules committee for many years. She played golf until age 90 - and drove a car until age 92. She loved to play bridge and played her last game earlier this month. Her mind was sharp until the very end of her life. Known as GG (Great Grandmother) to her family, one of her most important legacies to them was the week-long reunion she hosted every summer at Grand View Lodge. This past summer four generations of the family gathered there. Evie is survived by her four children Gale Madsen (Anker) of Lancaster, VA, Janet Zakrajsheck (Jim) of Mequon, WI, Alan Struthers (Jeanna) of Sea Girt, NJ, and Richard Struthers (Glenda) of Minneapolis, ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and brother William "Tittle" Tart. She was preceded in death by husband Alan, sister Anna Bell Page, and brothers Graham and Paul Tart. Special thanks to Warm Hands, Kind Hearts and all their wonderful caregivers, especially Courtney Meyer, and to the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff at Park Nicollet. A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held 2 pm Sunday, November 3, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave. S., Minneapolis.
