Erich Wisiol

Wisiol Erich Scharman Wisiol, M.D., age 74, of Golden Valley, Minnesota, died Nov. 21, 2004. Survived by devoted wife, Edith; his sister, Greta Rogers of Appleton, WI; daughters Johanna (James) Redpath of Bronxville, NY and Erika (Timothy) Schneider of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Betsy, Hans, Erich Schneider and Karly and Jack Redpath; nephews Bruce (Sara) Rogers of Ketchum, ID and Tryg (Amy) Rogers of Portland OR; niece, Karleanne Rogers of Portland OR, and countless wonderful friends, colleagues and patients who shared his life. Dr. Wisiol was born in Marshfield, WI on Dec. 9, 1929. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Dartmouth College and Medical School in 1952 and Harvard Medical School in 1954. His keen interest in surgery and neurology led him to residency programs at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, the Mayo Clinic, and Peter Bent Brigham and Children's Hospital in Boston. He completed his neurosurgical residency in 1963. He then joined Dr. Harold Buchstein (1908-1987) and started Neurosurgical Associates Ltd., in Minneapolis. Dr. Wisiol was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa, Hennepin County Medical Society, Minnesota Medical Association, American Medical Association, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Society of University Neurosurgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the William T. Peyton Society, and the Minnesota Neurosurgical Society. He was a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Wisiol contributed to his profession in positions of leadership and publication of scholarly writing. He served as a Captain in the United States Army in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he met his wife, Edith Kress of Frankfurt a/Main, Germany. Annual skiing trips with SKI-MD, playing golf and tennis, classical music, and spending time in the out-of-doors were what he enjoyed, but Dr. Wisiol's passion was his patients. He demonstrated dedication, compassion and professionalism with his patients and their families. Special Thanks to Dr. Ray Scallen, Dr. Mahmoud Nagib, the stellar nursing staff on Station 53, and the Abbott-Northwestern OR staff who took such excellent care of all of us. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Diabetes Association or Camp Manito- wish Y.M.C.A, are preferred.
