Elywin "Bud" Carroll Martin, Jr.

Elywin "Bud" Martin, Jr. passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025. He was born in San Diego, California on April 24, 1941. He was a devoted husband and father, as well as a woodworker, musician, linguist, goofball, and fan of Monty Python and Mel Brooks films. As he preferred in life, we will refer to him only as "Bud." He will haunt us for eternity if we use his given name. Bud was the last of five children (and, at the time of his birth, the shortest). To help survive being the youngest, he developed physical swiftness and an equally quick sense of humor. His physical speed led him to enjoy running in track events, and he was a decorated running back, safety, and placekicker for his high school and college football teams (when helmets had one face bar, tops). As for his wit, he collected and told jokes for the rest of his life. After college, Bud joined the U.S. Air Force as a linguistics specialist. He was proud to serve and loved his time in the Air Force, and while stationed in Japan he decided to learn the native language out of respect for his hosts. After returning home he met Margaret "Meg" Jennings, and through his persistence and wit (and her boundless patience), they got married and built a life together. They left San Diego for Minnesota in 1980 (yes, they were aware of the climate difference) and their whole family remains there still. Bud held several occupations in his working life, including helping to develop one of the first remotely networked computer systems. He was also a grocery store handyman, an auto glass specialist, and helped run a hobby shop. He was a true polymath. Bud was an excellent fingerstyle guitarist and singer, a lover of music, a skilled joke teller, and a truly gifted woodworker. He loved trains (both real and model), and while he enjoyed all kinds of fishing he particularly loved fishing from the Mission Bay jetty in San Diego. We remember him at his best, when he loved hosting birthday parties, watching comedies and sci-fi movies with his family, generously feeding all his children's friends, chasing giggling grandkids, and telling jokes to loved ones and strangers alike. He had no tolerance for bullies and believed that humor is a kindness. Bud is survived by his wife Meg; his children Teri Halsrud (Michael), Steve (Jill), Scott, and Brian; his grandchildren Matthew (Blažka), Eleanor, Emma, Lily, and Toby; and his sisters Jo and Nonie. He was preceded in death by everyone who died before him. The memorial will be a private one, so please use any money you may have spent on flowers to share some ice cream with your loved ones. And though his ashes will be scattered and he won't have a burial plot, his gravestone would certainly have included his favorite tongue-in-cheek parting words: "Stop by again when you can't stay so long." We miss you already, Bud.
