Ellen Lou Misterek

Ellen Lou Misterek was born July 23, 1933 in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Catholic High School and attended college in Madison, Wisconsin for one year. She finished her second year at a college in Madison, SD and earned her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in Harold, SD where she met Vernard Misterek, her husband for over 40 years. The early years of her marriage were marked with many moves in South Dakota and North Dakota because Vernard worked construction. Fortunately, Ellen was able to always find a teaching job to help the family especially during the winter months. Ellen was an avid reader and as a teacher taught many children how to read. This was her legacy. She loved academic learning, history and encouraged good study habits in all of her children. After teaching, Ellen worked for State of South Dakota as a legal secretary. She sold Avon for a while in Fort Pierre. She did volunteer work at the hospital baking and delivering cookies to patients. She also volunteered to set up luncheons at the Ladies auxiliary. Upon her husband Vernard's death she moved to Minneapolis to be close to her boys. She resided in a retirement community. She enjoyed all the activities especially bingo and dressing up for Halloween. Ellen always enjoyed walking and flower gardening. She had a great sense of humor. She and Ed bet a dime on important Twins and Viking games. Her greatest joy were visits from her family as she grew older. Faith was an important part of Ellen's life. Though raised Catholic, she attended the Episcopal church in Fort Pierre for many years liking the small intimate group of worshipers. Upon moving to a Lutheran Retirement community, she often went to chapel and prayed with the pastors in her later years. Ellen loved being a lady and fixing up. She continued to look put together all of her years. She always worried about her clothes and her hair which her friend and hairdresser, Carmen Knake keep in tip top shape. She is preceded in death by parents, Lou and John Kinney, siblings, Pat Kinney, Elizabeth Shelquist, her husband Vernard George Misterek, her sons, Kinney Misterek and Eddie Misterek. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Barrett, and son-in-law, Mike Barrett and daughter-in-law Susan Misterek, grandsons, Christopher Barrett and Pierce Barrett. A funeral service will be held at Washburn McReavy Columbia Heights Chapel 4101 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN 55421 on June 14th at the at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior, followed by a luncheon at the Railworks Brewery on Central Ave. There will be a burial service at Scotty Phillips Cemetery in Fort Pierre, South Dakota for both Edward and Ellen June 20th at 10:30 am followed by luncheon at Ricky Z Brickhouse BBQ and Grill at 11:30 am.
