Ellen Therese Carlson

Ellen Therese Carlson (Holl), age 93, died peacefully at her home in Roseville, Minnesota, on July 15, 2022, surrounded by her family. Ellen was born May 30, 1929, in St. Paul, MN. She was raised in Forest Lake, MN, a place that always brought her comfort. The daughter of Raymond and Jane Holl, Ellen was the fourth oldest of nine children. She was a cherished sister to Robert, Richard, Mary, Nadine, Marguerite, Rosalie, Donald, and Leo. After high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. She married Warren Benhardt "Ben" Carlson on June 27, 1953 and was his loving and devoted "Dearie" for 61 years. They raised their five children, Kathleen, Michele, Mary Ellen, Michael, and Elizabeth, in Roseville, MN. Ellen proudly managed a demanding career while raising her family. The first part of her career was spent teaching high school science and home economics. In 1974, she began a new career as a staff columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Her "Household Forum" column covered recipes, nutrition, restaurant reviews (her kids' favorite) and helpful household hints. In May 1994, Ellen received the prestigious James Beard award, which recognizes culinary professionals, for her writing. She had a strong work ethic and expected the same from her children. Though she rarely turned down an opportunity to work on a sewing or cooking project, family and faith were most important to Ellen. She was excited to host or attend all family gatherings, treasuring any opportunity to be with her family. Ellen modeled her strong Catholic faith daily to her family, and she was a pillar for the St. Odilia Catholic Church community in Shoreview. She loved reading, camping with her family, traveling with Warren, and cooking and baking for family and friends. Ellen is survived by her children, Kathleen (Jim) Peterson, Michele (Todd) Dosen, Mary Ellen (Mark) Gross, Michael (Kelly) Carlson, and Elizabeth (Ron) Burtman, and 13 beloved grandchildren: Kristen, Julie (Drew), Molly (Brian), and Kevin Vanek; James (Ashley) and Jane Dosen; Anthony (Kari), Jennifer, Melissa, and Thomas Gross; Shane (Brittany), Joseph (Mercedes), and Georgia Carlson; and 6 cherished great-grandchildren: Landon, Ava, Kinley, Emerson, Grayson, and Oliver; her siblings, Nadine Johnson, Marguerite (Bill) Jeans, Rosalie (Tom) Hall, Donald (Luella) Holl; Leo (Marilyn) Holl, and sister-in-law, Mabel Holl; and many nieces and nephews. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Warren, in 2015; and her siblings, Robert Holl, Richard Holl, and Mary Johnson. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 25, 2022, at the Church of St. Odilia, 3495 North Victoria, Shoreview, MN, with Visitation at 10:00 a.m., at the Church. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul, MN. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
