Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Anderlik

Elizabeth "Betty Boop" Anderlik, a wife, mother, grandmother, life-long traveler and philanthropist died peacefully in her sleep on June 25, 2017. Betty was born on July 8th 1935 in Henryville Township, Minnesota. Being the fourth eldest of ten children, Betty learned quickly how to make her thoughts and feelings known to others; a trait that would serve her well throughout her life. Betty met the love of her life Joseph Anderlik on a blind date, the two were soon married on July 27,1957. Betty devoted herself to raising three children, and volunteering with causes close to her heart. She enjoyed learning new things and exposing her children to as many experiences as possible; whether it be teaching the neighborhood kids to pull taffy, cooking foreign foods or playing ding-dong-ditch on their neighbors with a bumper crop of zucchini. Betty worked closely with the Minnesota International Center at the University of Minnesota to help international student learn English, learn about American culture and to break down cultural barriers. For decades Betty and Joe opened up their home and their hearts to foreign exchange students from Japan, Morocco and other places throughout the world. Both Betty and Joe remained friends with many of the foreign exchange students throughout their lives. Betty and Joe were both avid world travelers. Betty worked with many elementary school classes and shared her knowledge on Japanese culture, teaching children how to use chopsticks and how to wear a traditional Kimono. Betty and Joe both valued education and established a scholarship program for undergraduate engineers and helped establish the Joseph and Elizabeth Anderlik Teaching Laboratory at Iowa State University to better serve student needs. In 2010 Betty established the Joseph and Elizabeth Anderlik Professorship in Engineering at Iowa State. Together they also purchased defibrillators for first responders throughout Ramsey County. After the death of her husband in 2005, Betty continued to worked tirelessly with the American Cancer Society, and Hope Lodge to help build the Hope Lodge in Minneapolis. Betty worked closely with the Laboure Society, a Catholic charity that helps young men who have been called to enter into the priesthood. She was an ardent supporter of The Young America Foundation, The Heritage Foundation, and many of the local arts and museums. Like other snowbirds, Betty flew south for the winter and developed close ties with the Clearwater, Florida community. In her spare time she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, tennis, gardening, entertaining and discussing the latest politics of the day. She is survived by her three children Mark (Carol) Anderlik of Missoula, Montana; Lynn Thom of Eden Prairie and Jill (John) Rauenhorst of St. Michael. Five grandchildren; Ronny (Colleen), Erin, Daryl, Alex and Alex, one soon-to-be great-grandchild and eight siblings. She will always be remembered for her quick wit, her generous spirit, and amazing spaghetti sauce. She will be forever missed by her loved ones and friends who were lucky enough to know her and those who benefited greatly from her charity.Visitation 4-8PM Thursday, June 29 at ST.
