E. W. "Gus" Gustafson

Gustafson, E.W. "Gus" died peace-fully Monday, November 16, 2015 at his home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Gus was an avid golfer and father of six children; Dawn, Dan, Denise, Deanna, Carla and Michelle. Gus was born to Wallace and Elvina Gustafson on February 25, 1937 and grew up in Golden Valley, Minnesota. After graduating from Robbinsdale High School, Gus worked in the landscaping business for Dundee Nursery and later was an owner of several landscaping companies including Midland Nursery in New Hope and Dawn Heather Nursery in Delano. Gus proudly served in the Minnesota National Guard for more than a decade and later in his career worked in golf course construction for Robert Trent Sr., Robert Trent Jr., and Reese Jones building golf courses in Europe and Asia. One of his favorite projects was the Shanghai Country Club, the first championship golf course in China. Gus loved anything golf or anything landscaping spending much of his retirement trying to "shoot his age" and working constantly to develop the natural setting at his son's hobby farm north of Anoka. Gus was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many and his eye for nature surely will be missed by all. Gus was preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Elvina and is survived by his sister Nancy (Joe) Nystuen, and brothers Dale (Nan) Gustafson and Loren (Cynthia) Gustafson, daughters Dawn (Dennis) Atchison, Denise Bryn (Mike Raeker), Deanna (Elko) Perchyshyn, Carla (Todd) O'Leary, and Michelle (Rob) Delaune, son Dan (Jill) Gustafson, sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. The family wants to thank all the staff and residents at Autumn Glen Assisted Living in Coon Rapids that made Gus' last days so enjoyable. A celebration of Gus' life will be held Thursday November 19th, 2015 at Washburn-McReavy, Glen Haven Memorial Gardens - 5125 West Broadway Crystal, MN 55429. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The celebration service will begin at 2 p.m. followed by food and refreshments at Golden Valley Golf and Country Club immediately following the service. The family requests in lieu of flowers that any donations be made to the First Tee of Minneapolis (thefirstteeminneapolis.org) or St. Paul (thefirstteestpaul.org) to support golf for kids.
