Duane Wallace Grande

Duane Wallace Grande born at home on Saturday, May 17, 1930 in Ulen, Minnesota to Alfred Jacob (AJ) and Hattie Grande, the youngest of six children; he was the last surviving family member of this Grande Generation. Duane passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 11:04 pm after spending the day with his children. He was provided the light of a super moon for his journey J Duane graduated as class valedictorian from Ulen Public School; he attended North Dakota State University. He graduated with distinction from the University of Minnesota in December 1953 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Duane served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio where he received training as a USAF Facilities Engineering Officer. He was the Facilities Engineering Officer assigned to the Northeast Air Command Headquarters at the United States Air Force (USAF), Pepperrell AFB, St John’s Newfoundland. He was design and construction liaison with the Army Corp of Engineers. Duane grew up in Ulen, Minnesota where he attended school and helped his parents in the family restaurant. In school, he participated in all the athletic programs, including football, baseball, and basketball. On August 10, 1954 Duane married Corrine Mayer in Stewart, Minnesota. After 31 years of marriage she passed away June 20, 1985. In 1988 he met Jody Friesen and they later married on May 1, 1994 – they shared their life for 29 years. Duane was a registered Architect and Certified Interior Designer with the State of Minnesota. He had a passion for architecture and the design of spaces. His focus was on educational facilities, however did a wide variety of projects. Here are some of his more noted accomplishments:: Benedicta Fine Arts Center, College of St Benedict; initial plans and buildings for Bethel College; Fine Arts Center at the University of North Dakota; co-authored the design and implementation for the consolidation of the lower and Highland Campuses, University of Mankato; Montgomery Public Schools; Moorhead State University Fine Arts Center; Anoka County Library; Minnesota Historical Society Offices; Target Operations Center, Fridley; Evangelical Free Church of Embarrass; consulting architect to the St Paul Board of Education. Survived by his wife, Jody; children: Christopher Grande (Golden Valley, MN), Deborah and Michael Schaefer (Colby, WI), Stephen Grande (Crystal, MN), Kathy and Lorne Rosand (Maplewood, MN), Timothy and Batyah Grande (Marshfield, WI). Grandchildren: Travis, Elisabeth (Tom), Christopher, Morgan (Carl), Veronica (Nicholas), Walker, Spencer (Kayla), Aaron, Katherine, Cristen (David), David, Matthew, Benjamin, Zachary, Sarah (Jeremy). Great Grandchildren: Asher Thomas, Felicity Joy, Lucy Ann, Teruah, Ahavah, Zakar and his beloved pets Nakita, Matea. and Azanta Duane was preceded in death by his first wife Corrine and his daughter Sharon Marie; his parents Alfred and Hattie Grande; his siblings: Adeline and Erling Syverson, Harry Grande, Everett and Eva Grande, Evelyn Grande, Pearl and Louis Purrier. v/isitation: 5-7 pm Friday, January 5 at Washburn-McReavy Glen Haven Chapel, 5125 West Broadway, Crystal.
