Doug was a loving Husband, Father and "Bapa" from Ham Lake, MN. At the age of 85, with his loving wife at his side, he peacefully went to be with his Lord on August 8, 2018.Survived by his wife of 65 years, Ginger; children, Stephen (Carol), Lynne (Ken) Putz and Bruce (Judy); grandchildren, Geoffrey, Andrew, Robert (Kristine) and Stephanie Putz, Amanda and Allison Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Wyatt Putz. He was also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.Doug was preceded in death by parents Ernie and Agnes Gilbert, brother Donald and sister Donna.Doug was born in Sioux City, Iowa, then moved to Minneapolis for a few years before they finally settled in White Bear Lake, where he ultimately graduated from White Bear Lake Senior High in 1950. Subsequent to graduating high school, Doug joined the United States National Guard and remained in their service for eleven years. During his period of service, he attended radar school at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas, which led to his employment at Univac in 1958 as an installer of mainframe computers. Doug continued his employment with Univac (also named Sperry Univac, Sperry and Unisys) for the next 34 years. He worked as an installer, then advancing quickly to computer programming, and finally, as a chip designer in the CAD division. When his department at Unisys was sold around 1992 to Cadence, Doug was hired and employed by them for the next few years and continued his work as a designer. After briefly leaving their employ in 1999, he was rehired by them as a consultant for the final four years of his career. At the age of 71, Doug finally retired after 44 years of employment.Throughout his tenure with Univac/Sperry/Unisys, Doug attended Business School during the evenings at the University of Minnesota from approximately 1964 until graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor's degree. Then, at the age of 51, Doug was admitted to the Master of Computer Science program at the University of St. Thomas where he ultimately graduated in 1992.Doug was actively involved with service to his church and his community. He worked as a leader with the boy's club (Brigade) from 1968 through 1990. He also was extremely active in his church in Florida (Starkey Road Baptist) and with his church in Roseville (Rose Hill Alliance Church). Throughout his involvement with his church, Doug also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, which continued until 2017.However, Doug's greatest joy in life was with spending time with his friends and family. He truly enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, as well as traveling to various locations both nationally and internationally.Doug's pallbearers are his six loving grandchildren: Geoffrey, Andrew, Robert and Stephanie Putz; and Amanda and Allison Gilbert.Funeral service 11 AM Saturday, August 11 (visitation begins at 10 AM) at Rose Hill Alliance Church, 2105 Roselawn Ave. W., Roseville. Interment Roselawn Cemetery.Memorials preferred to Samaritan's Purse, Starkey Road Baptist in Seminole, FL or Rose Hill Alliance church in Roseville, MN.
