Dorothy Woolfork

Woolfork, Dorothy Age 91, of Mpls. Passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 31, 2007. Dorothy was born and raised in Bradley, AR and came to Minnesota in 1939 to find work. While working a series of jobs, she attended and graduated cosmetology school in 1948 and opened her own business in 1956. In 1962 Dorothy attended her first precinct caucus and thus began her illustrations and never-tiring career as a volunteer in political and community activism. Following are just a few of the acknowledgements that have highlighted the past 30-plus years in her dedication: The Theodore D. Horwitz Citizen Participation Award; Award of Excellence from the Mpls. Public Schools Board of Education; WCCO Radio "Good Neighbor" Award; Council on Black Minnesotans Service Award; Harriet Tubman Award; Sabathani Community Contribution Award; NAACP National Membership Director's Award Honorable Mention; "Dorothy Woolfork Appreciation Day" by Proclamation of the Governor of Minnesota and the Mayor of the City of Mpls. (June 17, 1990); Proclamation from the Governor of Minnesota recognizing "African-American Women in Volunteer Civic Service to Minnesota Day" (June 25, 1989): City of Mpls. Certificate of Recognition for outstanding volunteer service; Recognition Award from KARE 11 Television's "Eleven Who Care" program for unselfish volunteer service that contributes to the betterment of ELEVEN COUNTRY; The Barbara Jordan Award presented by the T.C.B.W.T.C. Committee in recognition of leadership in the area of local politics; Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Mpls. in appreciation of valuable contribution to the Mpls. Citizen Participation Process; and Control Data Corp. Employee Suggestion Program for improvement of Operations. Preceded in death by father, John W. Woolfork, and mother, Luvenia (Simpkins) Woolfork; and 5 sisters, Linnie Root of Milwaukee, WI, Eunice Long of Mpls., Victoria Brewer of Bradley, AR, Viola Layton of Los Angeles, CA, and Emma Miller of Mpls. Survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Inurnment Crystal Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Mpls. Urban League Academy High School.
