Dorothy Jean Flynn

Flynn, Dorothy Jean Dorothy passed away peacefully on November 13, 2013 with her family at her side. She was an angel and will be missed by many. Dorothy was born in Owatonna, MN on October 26, 1927 to father John Agar Hartle and mother Ruth McCaslin Hickok. Dorothy was raised on the family farm with her parents and older brother Robert John Hartle, in Steel County, MN. She attended the one-room Havana Township School thru grade 6, and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1945. She was active in 4-H, Job's Daughters and the school orchestra where she played the violin. Growing up Dorothy showed Duroc swine and lambs at the Steele County and Minnesota State Fairs where she was part of a 1939 feature article in LIFE magazine. Dorothy attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a year before attending and graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics. She still has many very good friends from Kappa Delta where she lived as a student. She also met her future husband Robert "Mick" Flynn at the U after he returned from World War II. They were married on July 28, 1951 and celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. They started their life together in Brainerd and soon moved to Detroit Lakes where they lived and later had a lake cottage for many years and still have many very good friends. While in DL she was active in many community groups including the Damiens Club, Yackety Yacht Club and 50 Club. In 1963 they moved to Edina, MN where they have lived for 50 years. Dorothy has been involved in many civic organizations including being Past President of the WCA Foundation, Twin Cities Opera Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, Past President of the 1006 Summit Avenue Society, Past President of the Edina Woman's Club and a Member of the Woman's Club of Minneapolis, with a special interest in the Ard Godfrey House. She was always grateful for the chance to meet great friends in each of these organizations. Dorothy and Mick were active supports of the University of Minnesota, the College of Liberal Arts and members of the University of Minnesota Presidents Club. They are life-long Gopher football fans. Dorothy is also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Her father, mother and brother preceded Dorothy in death. Her loving husband Mick Flynn, Edina, MN; her son John Flynn, Deephaven, MN; and her grandson Ryan Flynn, a freshman at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, survive her. She was very proud of her family. Above all Dorothy was kind, considerate and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, community volunteer and friend to many. She is loved deeply by her family and will be missed more than words can express. We hope her friends can join us for a celebration of her life on Saturday, November 30. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the U of M Foundation - Neurosciences or the charity of your choice .
