Donald Walter Johnson

Donald (Don) Walter Johnson, 81, of Bloomington, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus, on April 2, 2023 with his family by his side. Don was born on June 16, 1941, to Donald and Evelyn (Doege) Johnson. Don was born and raised in Minneapolis, where he attended Roosevelt High School (class of 59). Don was active in swimming, Swedish club and band. He had very fond memories of his time playing trumpet in the Swing Band. Following high school, Don joined the United States Navy where he was trained and served as a Naval Corpsman and medic. He served alongside marine forces in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Don served his country proudly and welcomed the title "Doc" given by his comrades. During Don's time of medic training in Camp Lejeune, NC and while serving at the naval hospital in Charleston, SC, he attended a Christmas dance on the naval base and met his Southern wife to be. After a short courtship they were married. Don and Amanda remained married for almost 62 years, and he loved her dearly. Following his service in the Navy, Don and Amanda returned to Minnesota and raised their three girls in Minneapolis. Don was a devoted husband and father. He was hardworking and committed to time with family. He used to say: "the family that plays together, stays together"! Thus, some form of camping, boating, swimming, fishing, racing and cards, etc....were weekly experiences. These are some of our family's fondest memories. In addition to his family, Don also spent time with many wonderful friends over the years doing the same and more. Don also loved car racing......so many weekends were spent out at the Elko and Raceway Park tracks. In later years he'd watch every race on tv. In earlier days, he loved taking trips on his motorcycle all over the country with Amanda. He was an avid, competent and serious card game player of all sorts; having the knack of not just remembering his own cards played but everyone else's too. Don was proudly employed with the MTC as an experienced bus driver for over 35 years until his retirement. While there, he drove many routes but was proud of his time driving Metro Mobility when that program was started. That program was near and dear to his heart as he felt a special connection by having a daughter with special needs. He had a very special bond with many of his riders through the years and was very highly regarded. Don was proud at his retirement to have attained the longest running safety record at that time. Donald is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Amanda; daughters, Teresa (Jay) Linn and Debra (David) Allmann; five Grandchildren: Chad (Katelyn), Amanda, Andrew, Catherine and Christine; sister: Dianne; sister in law: Pam; many other special relatives and friends. Donald is preceded in death by his daughter, Carla; his parents, Donald and Evelyn; his brother, LeRoy; many relatives and close friends. A private, family service is planned for June 15, 2023 at: Minneapolis, Fort Snelling Cemetery. A visitation and remembrance to celebrate Donald's life will be held on June 16, 2023, from 4-7 pm at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 1701 West Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington MN 55431 (enter door A)
