Donald F. Erpelding

Erpelding, Donald F. Age 78, of Minnetonka, passed away peacefully at his home on July 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Don was born January 20, 1937 in Altura, MN to Leonard and Frieda (Rahn) Erpelding. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1955 and was a graduate of Winona State. In June 1959 he married Mary Ann Speltz at Holy Trinity Church in Rollingstone, MN. Don began his teaching career in Elgin, Minnesota where he taught math and science for 3 years. After receiving his masters degree from University of South Dakota in Vermillion, he began teaching physics at Hopkins High School. He retired from teaching in 1993 after 31 years. Don is survived by his wife Mary Ann; children Kari (Brian) Bunkers of Owatonna; Mark (Gretchen) Erpelding of Wayzata; and Nick (Lara) Erpelding of Minnetonka; grandchildren Nathan, Marianna, Luke, Owen, Peter, Nolan & Everett, sister-in-law Marlene Erpelding of Ashville, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Frieda, his brother Jim Erpelding and sister Rita & brother-in-law Ron Erdmann. Don was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a master craftsman woodworker and spent many hours in his shop building beautiful cabinets, furniture and special creations for his grandchildren. He built the family cabin near Park Rapids, MN where he spent summertime enjoying the company of family and friends. For many years, Don enjoyed his role as a scoutmaster and as Hopkins High School's official boys' basketball scorekeeper. Since his retirement, Don was a regular at daily coffee gatherings with friends. He had a very generous spirit. He loved helping people and spending time with his family and many friends. He will be deeply missed. Visitation 4-7 PM Monday, July 13 at Washburn-McReavy Hopkins Chapel and one hour prior to Memorial Mass Tuesday, 11 AM at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church St. Joseph Campus, 1310 Mainstreet, Hopkins. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Oak Ridge, MN. Memorials preferred to St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, ICA Foodshelf or Catholic Charities.
