Dean Edward Longsyo

Dean Edward Longsyo was only given to us for 69 years, but in that time he made an unimaginable difference in the lives of those who were blessed enough to know him. He was a compassionate, kind, and brilliant man who would help anyone any time they needed it. He had a spirited sense of humor and always had the perfect line for any occasion. Dean was an exceptional mathematician and engineer, and an incredible artist. He has left a giant hole in the lives of all who loved him. He was taken far too soon on October 20, 2022. Dean is survived by his wife and soulmate, Marcella Dean, with whom he spent 46 years creating a magical beautiful life. He was born in Cloquet to Raymond and Mary, who preceded him in death, as well as many aunts and uncles and cousins. He leaves a sister, Laurene (Dorence Erickson), and two brothers, Walter and Steven (Donna). His childhood was filled with freedom and daring adventures. He loved to explore and play near the river; he and his friends built a rope swing to catapult themselves, launching their vivid imaginations. In his professional life, Dean worked at Eaton for almost 34 years in engineering, design and IT. He was a futurist with the ability to look at the world differently and solve problems we hadn't yet realized we had. He created 3D design programs 25 years before 3D became popular. He learned 'GRAPL' programming to produce the Geroler shape data. He went on to produce many shapes that allowed the study of different tip designs and their effects on leakage of any operating condition. He was a member and leader of the Pro E Users Group and the Robot Club at the Science Museum. Dean's passion for all things mechanical meant he would immerse himself in a problem until he could come up with the solution, often losing all track of time. He considered sleeping a waste of time. If he ever had free time, Dean researched many areas of science, mathematics, physics, astronomy, photography, and artwork. He spent years studying Apollonian circle gaskets and had a passion for involute gears and splines. He created a computer program to generate designs for his stunning Fibonacci artwork. He was a master of many forms of art, including sketches, pastels, watercolors, multi-media artwork, and music. Dean was an avid photographer, documenting all family events. He created poignant music on the guitar and keyboard, while never having had music lessons. While everyone loved Dean, he had a very special relationship with children. They all loved him and were drawn to him. He was called "the kid magnet". He could play with them, teach them, and inspire them all at the same time. At times he could even get into a bit of trouble with them. Dean was a cherished husband, a beloved brother and brother-in-law, a favorite adored uncle to numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, great grand niece and great grand nephew, and a dear cousin. While his passing has left us all grief stricken, his loving kindness and brilliance will inspire and uplift us for the rest of our lives.
