Darrell Hollingsworth Boyd

Boyd, Darrell Hollingsworth January 29, 1927 - May 3, 2016 Darrell, "Derry" Boyd was born and raised in Winnetka, IL. An avid student and athlete, he graduated with honors from North Shore Country Day School before heading east to college. Derry graduated from Princeton University in 1948 with a BSE in Engineering. While at Princeton, he was a member of the Varsity Golf team and the Cap & Gown Club. He had a long and successful career as a senior executive with the 3M Company where he served for 42 years leading global business units. His love of sport led him to get involved in Mt. Frontenac Ski Resort and Golf Course near Red Wing, MN, which he co-owned for over 35 years. A long time resident of Edina, MN, Derry was also active in the Minnesota Golf Course Owner's Association, the National Golf Course Owners Association, the City of Edina planning commissions, the Young America's Foundation, and the Alzheimer's Association, Minnesota/North Dakota chapter. Along with his beloved bride, "Sis", he was an active participant in A Better Chance of Edina and warmly welcomed a number of exchange students and other guests into their already-bustling home throughout the years. Derry was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Emily Matz Boyd; his beloved "bride" of 53 years, Sis; his twin brother, Denny, and sister, Cherry McNitt. He is survived by his 8 children, Drick (Cynthia), Randy (Simon), Tucker (Carmen), Winton (Tammy), Tierney (Rick), Perrin (Deb), Tiffany, Dustin (Chrissie); fourteen grandchildren; and special friend of 10 years, Junie DeCoster. Derry, along with Sis, took great pleasure in being parents and delighted in the warmth, excitement and commotion of their large and dynamic household. They loved to travel, play golf and tennis and ski with their family over the years. Following Sis's death, Derry and Junie were also companions in full and active lives, sharing love of travel, theater and socializing with friends and each other's families. Derry was a leader among men. He had a great love for the outdoors, enjoyed adventure, and possessed a strong sense of humor. A man of deep integrity, he set wonderful examples for all whom he touched throughout his life. We will always be inspired by his principled leadership, tireless work ethic, ardent commitment to education and his humble, yet deep generosity toward others. In particular, he showed extraordinary, affectionate care for Sis as she suffered from Alzheimer's for many years. We love you, Dad and we are always and forever "Poppy's People". A memorial service will be at Colonial Church of Edina on Wednesday, May 11th at 10:00 am. A visitation will precede the service at 9:00 am.
