Daniel Burns McAlpine

Daniel Burns McAlpine died peacefully on June 18, 2023 at Trillium Woods where he lived with his wife of 18 years, Becky (Ruth Ann) Tunks McAlpine. Dan's life of love, service and family will be remembered by his three daughters; Anne McAlpine (Lee Smith), Jeanne Truax (Dave Truax), Marsha Scherz (Dennis Scherz) and 6 grandchildren and their families Ryan, Vicki, Reagan and Harper Scherz; Kyle, Taylor and Sloane Scherz; Carla Truax; Bradley Truax and Cailee Niesen; Cullan, Cassie, Quentyn and Cillian Smith; Shane and Maggie Smith. Dan will be missed by his blended family as well: Brian Tunks (Cheryl Smith), Karen Post (Rich Reeves), Lynne McPherson (Scott McPherson), Ashleigh Kreider, Kaleigh Post, and Tess McPherson. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Marshall McAlpine, his son-in-law Lee Smith, sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and William Dannhauser, as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law Lyman and Joan Marshall and Laura and Joe Pucci. Dan was born on May 26, 1932 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Earl Hollinger McAlpine and Jeanette Burns McAlpine. Dan spent his early years in southern Oklahoma moving to Rains, Utah at age five. Dan moved frequently as a child because his father was a mining engineer for Columbia Coal Mining. From age 14 to age 17 Dan attended Wasatch Academy, a boarding school. Upon graduating at age 18 from Columbia High School in Columbia, Utah, Dan attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. Dan married Marilyn Marshall on June 18, 1954, and they settled in Denver, Colorado. They later moved to Iowa, and then the Twin Cities, raising their daughters in the home in Brooklyn Park where they lived for 32 years. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before Marilyn passed away in 2004. Dan was blessed to find love again, and he married Becky (Ruth Ann) Tunks in 2005 and enjoyed his retirement years traveling and playing golf. Always a hard worker, as a teenager, Dan worked weekends with his father at his grandfather's mine in Summerset, Utah. He also spent summers laying ties and maintaining railroad tracks. Jobs early in his career included delivering bread for Happy Home Bakery and opening new offices for Household Finance. Finding his niche, Dan enjoyed a long career as Comptroller/Business Manager for car dealerships in the Twin Cities. The Masonic organization was special to Dan, as his father and grandfather were past masters of their lodges. Dan served as Master of the Robbinsdale Masonic Lodge, sang in the Scottish Rite choir, and was President of the Robbinsdale Area Shrine Club. Dan has always been an active member of his church, serving for years on the finance committee at Brunswick United Methodist Church. He most recently attended Wayzata Community Church. The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at The Birches at Trillium Woods for their compassionate care for Dan in his final months of life. A service to celebrate Dan's life will be held at Wayzata Community Church on Thursday, June 29th at 10:00 with visitation starting at 9:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or a charity of your choice. Washburn-McReavy Robbinsdale Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
