Dale R. Johnson

Johnson, Dale R. Age 84, of Bloomington, was welcomed into Heaven on Aug.21, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents John & Bertha Johnson, his brother, Gerald, and his loving wife of 57 years, Jean. Survived by his sisters Irene Foster and Berneda Ward; children Dean (Kathi), Lynn (Bob) Bleckinger, Ron (Jane), and Barry (Mary); grandchildren Rob (Colleen), Beth (Ben) Dougherty, Ali (Todd) Slezak, Lindsay (Noah) Truax, Andy (Rachael), Carey (R.J.) Sharpe, Jenna (Chris) Golem, Ben (Courtney), Matt and Kelly; great-grandchildren Jack, Kristen, Robbie, Mayzie, Asher, Hannah, Lucas, and Amelia; and many friends. Dale was born near Good Thunder, MN and attended Mankato State. He served his country from 1946 to 1948 in Otsu and Osaka, Japan. After marrying Jean, they began their family in Mankato where Dale worked as Mankato Brewing Company's Treasurer. They moved to Edina in 1965. Dale was a man of strong faith and served through his work with the Minnesota South District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. He was the District Treasurer and Vice President for the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, a job he took great pride in. Dale was also deeply committed to his long time church, Cross View Lutheran, in which he was a charter member. He sang in the church choir for many years, and was often a greeter in the lobby to welcome new and returning congregants alike. Dale was a family man first and foremost. He loved family events, traveling, and delighted in the accomplishments of his children and their children. He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time and made fantastic gifts for his grandchildren. Some of his best-known works were his dollhouses, rocking horses and bedroom furniture. Dale also handcrafted nativity scene crèches for his family and many others. Dale was a great storyteller. Having lived through many changes (as he pointed out in an essay bound especially for his grandchildren), he reveled in surprising and delighting his grandkids with tales. Each Christmas Eve, Dale would circle up his loved ones and read The Night Before Christmas, concluding with a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. His leadership, confidence, and sense of humor will be missed greatly. "Prost, Grandpa Dale. Until we meet again." With love, your family. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, at 11:00AM, at Cross View Lutheran Church (6645 McCauley Trail, Edina, MN 55439). Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
