Curtis Gene Ackerman

After his six-month battle with lung cancer, Curtis Gene Ackerman, 77, died on July 29th, 2018 with his family by his side. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Berdena (Eggink), his daughter Janeen Bjugstad, his son Tim (Chris) Ackerman, his daughter Pam (Brett) Ackerman Hawkins. Grandchildren Abbie and Nick (Jackie) Bjugstad, Will and Benny Ackerman and Nena Hawkins. His brothers Gene (Joyce) Ackerman and his twin brother Dennis (Pat) Ackerman and other loving family and friends. Born on September 16, 1940 to parents Mitchell and Carrie (Kruse) Ackerman in Sibley, Iowa. He was raised on a farm near Little Rock, Iowa. In his early years he attended a country school and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1958. After attending Hope College in Holland Michigan, he joined the Navy. He was stationed in Hawaii, Alaska and Japan. Curt and Berde were married on October 30th, 1963. They moved to Pipestone Minnesota where their three children were born and he began his lifelong career in the insurance and financial industries. The most important parts of his career were the long-lasting and meaningful relationships that he shared with his clients. Always driven and goal oriented, Curt started running at the age of 40. He completed 10 marathons and enjoyed participating in numerous fun-runs. Farm-life built his strong work ethic. After selling his business (twice) he worked as an usher at U of M events, volunteered for Mission Trips to Alaska and Peru, and stayed busy on projects with his son, neighbors and at the cabin until his cough stopped him last fall. Curt loved the outdoors and walking. He yearned to learn and especially loved exploring different religions, mind-sets and positive thinking. Curt and his family enjoyed traveling as a group, talks around the dinner table and spending time together at the cabin in Wisconsin. He amazed his family by generously sharing his time, resources and energy. During several trips to The Netherlands, he became a part of (Berdena’s) Dutch family and was called “Brother”. His quirky personality let you know he was on your side. Open-minded, fun-loving and often mischievous. His greetings and conversation starters usually included a jab, poke, pinch, kiss or a hug. Curt’s ability to make everyone he met feel like they were his brother, Father, best friend, Opa or family member was truly what made him special. . Funeral service Monday, August 6 at Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton starting at 11:30 with the visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to GiGi’s Playhouse.
