Charlotte "Chalky" MacLean

MacLean Charlotte Lacey "Chalky" MacLean, died at peace on Sunday, March 15, 2004. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1971. In recent years, her illness had become an increasing physical struggle for her. However, throughout her illness, she had a positive attitude, and modeled courage, grace, and dignity. Chalky was born Charlotte Joanne Lacey in Boston, MA on March 8, 1924, the youngest of five children. She attended Brimmer and May School and graduated from Walnut Hill School, Natick, MA and then Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH. Chalky is preceded in death by her parents, Edward Norman Lacey and Katharine Woods Lacey; her siblings, Anne Lacey Holden, Norman Fairbank Lacey, Theodore Woods Lacey, and Caroline (Cunnie) Lacey Isham Rice; and her infant son, David Lockwood MacLean. Chalky is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Alan Lockwood Mac- Lean and her children and cherished grandchildren, William Bradley (Laurie) MacLean and their children, Edward (Ted), Anna, Grace, and Julia; Katharine Ann (Thomas) Swan and their children, Jenna and Laura; and Robert Alan (Anne) MacLean and their children, Lacey Anne and Matthew. Even though Chalky was proud of her New England heritage, she was a resident of Edina for over 50 years. After graduating from college, she worked in the mechanical engineering dept. of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After her marriage to Al on June 6, 1948, she worked in the admissions office of Stanford University. She was active in church activities in Minneapolis and Scottsdale, AZ (choir and president of Christian Women's Fellowship) and the Edina Women's Club. However, Chalky's greatest joy in life was being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and this she did well. She also treasured her many friendships. We will always remember her strong, quiet faith and a smile that lit up a room and was welcoming to all. Private interment Lakewood Cemetery. Funeral service Friday 10:00 AM at Lakewood Chapel, 36th & Hennepin Ave. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter.
