Charles Robert Peluso, M.D.

Retired Physician and U of M Professor Age 86, of St. Anthony, Mn. Passed away peacefully Nov. 15 after a short illness. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 63 years, Lorraine, and eight children. A native of St. Paul, he was a retired family physician who practiced medicine in northeast Minneapolis for many years, caring for thousands of people. He was chief of staff at the old St. Barnabas Hospital in Minneapolis. After 25 years in private practice, he turned to academia, joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School, his alma mater, where he taught residents in family practice at the U and Hennepin County Medical Center. As an associate professor of medicine at the university, he also served for years as a member of the Medical School's admissions committee, and chaired the committee in the 1970s. In 1980, he was recruited by the Medical College of the University of Georgia to help lead its family practice residency program in Savannah, Ga. He retired from teaching in 1987, maintaining his home in Savannah, and spending summer months with Lorrie at the family's island on Lake Vermilion, near Cook, Mn. "Chuck" or "Charlie" or just "Doc" to his many friends, he was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He went through medical school on an accelerated three-year Navy program during the war years, graduating from the U of M Medical School in 1946. He was recalled into the service in the '50s, this time serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Phoenix, Az., for two years as medical director of Army inductions. A lifelong love of music began as a young man, and led to vocal solos with the St. Paul Pops Concert, where he was called "a musical find" while still a medical student. The Pioneer Press critic said "he has a voice that would carry him far in the music world." In addition to his wife, Lorrie, he is survived by his eight children: Thomas (Kathy) and Charles, Jr., (Siobhan Flynn) all of Rochester; Andrea (Bruce) Dorn, of Seattle, Wa.; Michael (Gloria) of New Brighton; Steven of Minneapolis; Debra (David) Ayres, of Prior Lake; Jean (David) Huss of St. Anthony; and Maria Binder of New Brighton; 13 grandchildren; and sister, Rosemary Peterson, of Minneapolis. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at HOLCOMB-HENRY-BOOM FUNERAL HOME, 515 Hwy. 96 W. at Mackubin, Shoreview (651-482-7606). Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Wednesday (with visitation one hour prior to service) at ST. CHARLES BORROMEO CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2739 Stinson Blvd., St. Anthony. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Minnesota Medical Foundation for family practice scholarship support.
