Carl McFarland

McFarland Carl Edward, age 80, a resident of Plymouth, MN died June 3rd, 2002. He was the son of the late Edward & Barbara McFarland of Topeka, KS and the husband of Marjie Horner McFarland of Plymouth, MN. Born in Koblenz, Germany to a US Army service family on August 5th, 1921. Mr. McFarland served in the Kansas National Guard before America's entry into WW II and transferred to the United States Air Forces after Pearl Harbor. For three years he flew people and supplies over the Himalayan Mountains between India and China, serving more than 500 flights in the most dangerous flying environment of the war. After the war he married Betty Smith in Topeka, KS and together they raised 2 daughters and 2 sons. Mr. McFarland earned a BA and a Masters Degree from the University of Chicago. Mr. McFarland owned and operated several restaurants in Topeka until his retirement. His wife Betty Smith McFarland preceded him in death in 1988. In 1990 he married Marjie Horner Hawthorne of Mpls. Up until the time of his death Mr. McFarland was an active member of the Hump Pilots Association, an avid gardener and a fisherman. He and his wife, Marjie, travelled widely. Mr. McFarland continued applying his culinary knowledge as an employee of Byerly's deli kitchen. He is survived by his wife; sister and brother, Trudy and Walter McFarland of Topeka, KS; children, Karla McFarland of Portland, OR, Carl (Jeanne) McFarland of Birm- ingham, AL, Stephen (Connie) McFarland of Auburn, AL, Wendy McFarland of Topeka, KS; 5 grandchildren; step children, Lynn (Haines) Moffat of Rockford, IL, John (Corrine) Hawthorne of Puposky, MN, Tim (Laya) Hawthorne of Angels, CA, Peter (Rebecca) Hawthorne of Wayzata, Matt (Debbie) Hawthorne of Puposky, MN; 9 step grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 5th (TODAY), 11 am at Wayzata Community Church, Wayzata.
