Bernard "Bernie" Y. Hamilton, Jr., Navy Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) July 12, 1935 - May 1, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernie Hamilton, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and retired Navy Chief Petty Officer. Bernie peacefully departed from this world on May 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 12, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky, Bernie dedicated 23 plus years of his life in service to his country as a proud member of both the National Guard (3yrs.) and the United States Navy (20+yrs.). Throughout his distinguished military career, Bernie exemplified honor, courage, and commitment, earning the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. During his tenure in the Navy, Bernie served his country proudly at duty stations located throughout the world, as well as having served aboard numerous vessels. Bernie was also a dedicated 2nd generation member of the Masonic organization, contributing to their values of fellowship, charity, and community service. He became a member of the York Rite while stationed in Okinawa in 1966, he later joined the Minneapolis Masonic Lodge 19 A.F. & A.M. and was a member of the Scottish Rite where he attained the level of 32nd Degree. Following his retirement from the Navy, Bernie was an active member of the American Legion. Over the years, he held many positions in both the Eden Prairie and Chanhassen Posts, including Post Commander. He continued his professional life with positions at Control Data Corporation and Honeywell Corporation, eventually retiring in 2001. In addition to his military service, Bernie was a devoted husband to Donna, with whom he shared 67 years of love and companionship. He was a loving father to 5 children, including his son, David (Shelley) Hamilton who preceded him in death at the age of 48. Bernie is survived by 4 children, Gwen (Steven) Starr, Rochelle (Tony) Greaves, Craig (Gwen) Hamilton, and Kim Hamilton; a cherished grandfather to 9 grandchildren, Amie (Jason) Hunt, Mark (Tara) Hamilton, Brianna Hamilton, Cameron (Karie) Hamilton, Dianna (Josh) Currier, Erik Hamilton, Gina Hamilton, Spencer Greaves, and Giana Forte; and a great grandfather to 8 great grandchildren, Ashlie, Emilie, Jameson, Kellen, Harper, Grayson, Hazel, and Charlie. Bernie was an only child, but when he married Donna, he gained 12 siblings that welcomed and embraced him as one of their own. He was proud to be one of the founding members of the "Houghton Outlaws" which were the spouses of the "Original 13." Bernie was known and loved for his creative toasts and resounding "hip, hip, hooray" tributes at family weddings, reunions, and other events. Outside of his professional life, Bernie enjoyed dancing with Donna, crypto puzzling, bowling, drawing, painting, playing his ukulele and guitar, and curling with the American Legion team. Bernie also enjoyed traveling with Donna to visit family, attend reunions, and re-discover his favorite "spots" throughout the world. Bernie will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of patriotic service, creative wordsmithing, and love for art and music will continue to inspire us for generations to come. A celebration of Bernie's life will be scheduled and shared at a later date. In memory of Bernie, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society to support our family members who have bravely battled or continue to fight this disease. Your contribution will honor Bernie and his commitment to helping those affected by cancer within our immediate and extended family. Forever in our hearts, may Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) Bernard Y.
