Bernadine Ellen Blader

Bernadine Ellen (Weldon) Blader, known to most as the "Beautiful Rose of Excelsior," lived 92 wonderful years. Bernie was born in St. Paul to David and Helen Weldon on May 12, 1932. She grew up in White Bear with her loving sister Audrey and their dog, Pal. Bernie graduated from Johnson High School in 1950. One of her many talents at that time was playing the accordion and piano, as well as sewing all her stylish clothes. Bernie would say, "If you are going to do something, do it right and make it pretty!" She went on to attend and graduate from Northwestern Bible College. Bernie met the love of her life, Bob, on a blind date. It was love at first sight for Bob; he proposed on that date and then took a job that had him traveling for three years. When Bob called again to declare his love, she said, "Put it in writing!" And so, he did. This letter led to 64 years of marriage, five children and their spouses, twelve grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. As if her life wasn't busy enough, she opened Antiquity Rose Antiques and Dining Room in 1973. She left a legacy of memories serving her guests with antique treasures, delicious homemade food, and desserts. After 41 years, she decided it was time to retire at the young age of 83. She was a true entrepreneur and a significant part of the history of Excelsior. Bernie was successful at whatever she put her hand to, always had a heart for the underdog, and set an example we will gladly follow. We will always remember our beautiful mother's strength, exquisite style, and Christ-filled heart! Bob and Bernie have 5 children and 12 grandchildren: Randy and (Karen) Blader, Brett, Rachel (Adam Mitchell), Justin; Teri and (Steve) Bennett, Charlie, Jack; Shelly and (Dan) Kruse, Kally (Andrew Carter), Jake (Teresa); Barb and (Paul) Bowman, Abbie (Izak Moleterno), Bella; Bonnie and (Rob) Huskey, Paige, Joe, Ross. 4 great-grandchildren: Beau Bennett, Charlotte and Arthur Carter, and Jagger Mitchell. Preceded in death by husband, Bob 2021. Survived by her beloved sister Audrey Weldon Johnson, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A celebration of Bernie's life will be held at Excelsior Covenant Church 19955 Excelsior Blvd. Excelsior, MN on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025. Visitation begins at 1:00pm followed by the service at 2:00pm. Desserts will be served immediately afterward. Bernie often said, "Don't worry about the negative; focus on the positive." In her honor, we encourage everyone to wear bright, cheerful colors--we think she would love it! To celebrate Bernie's memory, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
