Arturo G. Herrera

Herrera, Arturo Guillermo was born in Chile on July 19, 1927 and died in St. Anthony, MN on June 12, 2019. He was a charismatic man who touched the lives of many people: the type of person that would light up a room, start a conversation with anyone he met, and commit to helping kids across the world. He spent his life engaged with his primary loves: all things Chilean, all things British, teaching, and his family. The Chilean and British attachments were self-evident to anyone who had more than a 5-minute conversation with him. Pride in his heritage was obvious to all who knew him, and he visited Chile and England many times to connect with friends and family. His passion for being both a teacher and learner became evident to anyone who spoke with him about what he did for a living. Señor spent his professional career teaching and his students found him to be a kind, caring, gentle teacher who was generous with his time. He not only taught Spanish, he taught the values and traditions of multiple Spanish speaking cultures and encouraged his students to immerse themselves in the language learning experience. He also touched many lives with his passion for numerous humanitarian causes. At the top of this list was working with fellow refugees and immigrants as they settled in Minnesota. His own immigrant experience allowed him to teach English as a Second Language from both a personal and practical perspective which students embraced. It also allowed him the opportunity to learn about other cultures, a love which he passed on to both his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren will remember him for his annual birthday song calls, unwavering support of attaining their education and career goals, and for teaching them to have pride in their culture and heritage. His daughters will remember him for encouraging them to travel, for partnering with their mother to always put education first, and for always making sure they spoke grammatically correct Spanish and English. Arturo was preceded in death by his wife, Maria (Maruja) Herrera. He is survived by his daughters Rose Hamerlinck (Michael), Patricia Herrera, Monica Herrera (John Heintz) and Maria Claudia Herrera, and four grandchildren, Gabriela Hamerlinck (Tyler Smith), Kurt Herrera-Heintz, Marina Herrera-Heintz, and Samantha Steele (Joe Fletcher). The family would like to thank all the staff at Pearl Garden for their support and care of Arturo in his last few years. A memorial service celebrating Arturo's life will be held on Sunday, July 14 at 4:30 PM at Washburn- McReavy, 2901 Johnson Street NE, Minneapolis. A reception will follow at Jax Café from 6-8 PM, 1928 University Ave. NE, Minneapolis. Memorials will be accepted for the Arturo and Maruja Herrera Scholarship Fund at St. Anthony High School.
