Arnold "Bud" Ryden

Ryden, Arnold John "Bud" Business innovator and entrepreneur of Edina and St. Petersburg, FL, passed away on August 25, 2007, at the age of 86. A prominent figure in several MN companies, he was recognized in Fortune Magazine in 1960 for his accomplishments. In the 1950s Bud was a founder of Control Data Corp., where he served as Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and a Director. He was instrumental in forming National Semiconductor Corp., serving as Chairman. Bud also was President of Midwest Technical Development Corp. and Telex and Chairman of MidTex. Born in Kansas, Bud graduated from Minneapolis South High School and the University of Minnesota. He received a M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School and was named a Baker Scholar. Commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army, Bud served in the Quartermaster Corp. He and his former wife, Charlotte Beattie of Bloomington, raised three daughters. Bud is survived by Jane of Edina and St. Petersburg; daughters, Sheryl and husband Richard Larsen of Essex, VT; Nancy and husband Calvin Branton of Woodbury, MN; and Cynthia and husband John Austin of Port Ludlow, WA; grandchildren, Craig Branton and Anna Branton of Denver, CO; sister, Louise Beckman of Lindsborg, KS; and a niece and two nephews. Bud served on the boards of Gethsemane Lutheran Church and Gustavus Adolphus College (including as Chairman) and made many philanthropic contributions, including a pipe organ for Gethsemane and financial support for the start-up of the prestigious Nobel Conference at Gustavus. Bud also served on the National Board of Pensions of the Lutheran Church of America and was a member of Interlachen Country Club, the Athletic Club, Metro Y's Men's Club and YPO. Throughout his life, Bud enjoyed music, tennis, golf, reading, discussions of current events and friends and family. Memorial contributions can be made to Gustavus Adolphus College's annual Nobel Conference (800 West College Avenue, St. Peter, MN 56082) or donor's choice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 11:00 am with visitation 1/2 hour before the service at: Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy 100
