Arlyce Jean Van Cleve

Arlyce J. Van Cleve, of Maple Grove unexpectedly passed away at the age of 85 on April 17, 2025. Arlyce was born in Menahga, MN on January 27, 1940 to Charles and Clara Stimpson. She lived in Menahga with her family until they moved to Montana in 1952. In 1954 she moved with her family to Minneapolis, where she graduated from the Vocational High School. Soon after graduation, she met and married Norman Johnson with whom she shared 3 children, Michael, Debbie and Diane. Arlyce loved horses, so when her and Norm moved to Corcoran, MN, she didn't wait long to own a few, which over the years turned into a few dozen. Arlyce, along with her family became very involved with showing horses. Showing horses (equitation style) became her way of life for many years and where she made many life long friends. Since Arlyce was a seamstress, it only made sense for her to sew her own show outfits. By doing this, her craftsmanship got the attention of many other equestrians and soon turned into a thriving business. In 1982, Arlyce married Benny Van Cleve and spent many years living in the Elko/New Market area all while continuing to show her horses. After her divorce from Benny, Arlyce moved to Maple Grove with her daughter Diane, where she lived until her passing. Arlyce also had another love, which was baking. She would spend several days a week baking, especially cookies which she didn't eat many herself, she got a lot of joy just giving them away. So, if you were ever at her home in Maple Grove, it was most likely that you were sent home with an ice cream bucket filled with them. Arlyce was a strong willed and independent woman. As many of you know, she contracted polio when she was 18 years old, but with her drive and determination to not let anything get in her way, she accomplished many feats that most woman would never even think of attempting. Arlyce will be deeply missed by those that loved her, and there were many, especially her siblings, with whom she was extremely close. Arlyce is survived by her children; Michael (Kwang Sun) Johnson, Debbie (Bill) Boettner and Diane Johnson; grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew (Shannon) Boettner, Mark and Daniel (Carrie) Johnson; great grandchildren, Claire and Daniel Johnson Jr. Arlyce was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara Stimpson, siblings: Clarence Stimpson, Marjorie Kumma, Lloyd Stimpson, Lorraine Theis, Margaret Hein, Arlene Stimpson (Arlyce's twin sister, age 6) and George Stimpson. Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, 5929 Brooklyn Blvd., Brooklyn Center, MN. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. and service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be a private event in Menahga at a later date when she will be laid to rest next to her twin sister, Arlene.
