Ann Carlson Birt

Birt, Ann Carlson Ann Carlson Birt ended her long fight with ovarian cancer on Tuesday, June 9. Preceded in death by her father, Joseph Arthur Carlson and mother, Doris Johnson Carlson. She is survived by her husband Michael Birt; son Christopher Birt and his wife Pauline, and their two sons, Joseph and Franklin; daughter Wendy Jo Miller, her husband Gregory Miller, and their two daughters, Anna and Celia. Ann graduated from Central High School in St. Paul and attended Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1956 with a B.S in Home Economics and Related Art Majors. Her combined ten years of life abroad with her family in Milan, Italy and Tokyo Japan deeply impacted her design style in the interior design company she founded, Ann E. Birt Interiors. She held many honors including President of the Tokyo-American Women's Club, Fellow and President of the local IFDA chapter, Junior League Sustainer, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sustainer; Board Member, Treasurer and Chair of the Endowment Fund for the Goldstein Museum of Design. Board Member of Phi Upsilon Omicron. She was humbled to receive the Friend of the College of the Home Economics (U of M) Award in 2006, and the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award for the College of Design in 2012 while serving on the Advisory Board of that college. Being a lover of the arts, she was a founding member of the Decorative Arts Council of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) and co-chair of the MIA Antiques Show and Sale in 1997, co-chair of the MIA's Art in Bloom event in 2012 and a Board member of the MIA Friends of the Institute. She has also served on the Eden Prairie Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commissions. Her great loves in life were her family, friends, cabin, tennis, travel, art, gardening and bridge. She had a deep and unconquered faith that she practiced daily, and, as she approached death. She was known for her rock solid integrity and absolute honesty. Her enduring legacy will be with those who came in contact with her and will forever remember how she touched their lives. Though missed, she will never be forgotten. Visitation from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home - 5000 West 50th St., Edina, MN. Funeral will be held on Monday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Rd. Edina, MN.
