Andrew Scott

Age 84 of Minneapolis Died peacefully on May 24, 2012 He was a respected attorney, one of the founders of Cray Research, Inc. and a proud husband and father. He was a man who was true to himself, his work ethic and pursuing his interests. He was born in St. Paul to AnnaMae (Gorry) and Ulric Scott. He began work at the age of 12 as a messenger for partners of the St. Paul Law Firm of Doherty, Rumble & Butler. He later became a partner in the firm, and the founding partner of its Minneapolis office. He attended St. Luke Elementary School, St. Paul Central High School, and the University of Minnesota for both undergraduate and Law School. He served in the United States Army in WWII and in Korea. He left DRB to form Andrew Scott LTD to continue his legal career advising corporations and individuals. His clear and strategic advice was sought for many years after he retired. "He was able, particularly in times of crisis, to take enormous amounts of information, and distill them to their essence. He was extremely wise and could really cut to the chase," said a long-time business associate. He was a key legal advisor to famed engineer Seymour Cray in the creation of Cray Research, Inc., where he served as Vice Chairman and General Counsel. His work allowed him to do business all over the world, and he carried that zest for travel into his family. His wife and daughters accompanied him on adventures ranging from a summer on Crete to Christmas in Bora Bora. He was an ardent practitioner of Tai Chi, a prolific gardener, theatergoer and movie lover. He and Kathleen built and lived in homes in the Twin Cities, the North Shore of Lake Superior and on the island of Maui. He served on the Boards of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the MN Orchestra, Children's Theater Company, Channel 2, St. Paul Academy and Summit School, other boards, and numerous high-tech companies. He was a former member of The Minneapolis Club, Somerset Country Club and the Minnesota Club. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathleen (Kennedy) Scott; and his daughters, Lucia Paul (Troy) of Minneapolis, Andrea Scott of New York City; grandchildren, Meredith and Walter Duff. He is also survived by brothers, Ulric "Rick" and Michael (Jeanie). He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Maura Bremer (Bob). The family wishes to thank all of Andrew's caregivers at Walker Methodist for their compassion, thoughtfulness and great kindness. As per Andrew's wishes, private services will be held.
