Andrew Rubis

Rubis Andrew L. Rubis, age 87, of New Brighton, formerly of Coon Rapids, died peacefully May 12 at North Memorial Residential Hospice. Survived by loving wife of 65 years Fannie: son, Lonnie (Connie) Rubis; daughters, Vicki (Joe) Pung, Andrea (Dale) Arnold, Joy (Jim) Sovada, Marsha (Tom) Lehn, and Jeanne (Ross) Edmundson; grandchildren, Jarrett (Kristin) Rubis, Jason (Jennifer) Rubis, Jessie (Shannon) Brewer, Derek Rubis, Hans (Caroline) Pung, Jorn (Stacie) Pung, Willi (Mary) Pung, Wade (Sharon) Arnold, Monica Arnold, Christopher (Jennifer) Sovada, Steve (Carmen) Sovada, Mandy (Noel) Jabbour, Jeff Lehn, Mike Lehn, Emily Lehn, Krisita Edmundson, and Matthew Edmundson; great-grandchildren, Ali, Trent, Sydney, Isabella, Harrison, Lydia, and Jack. He is survived by three sisters, Joyce Bonn, Regina Beatty, and Shirley Mikael. He loved to dance to the big band music of Dorsey, Kaye and Miller. He loved the outdoors. His garden was the envy of the neighbors and was shared reluctantly with the neighborhood rabbits. He and Fannie spent many a moon fishing and hunting together, whether it was out of a homemade boat fighting the waves in the northern lakes, or in a canoe. The last forty summers would find him at his beloved retreat, his cabin on the Gunflint Trail. His children and grandchildren have a treasure of memories of the time spent at the cabin. Being an Iowa boy, he attended Buena Vista College and was a star athlete in football and basketball. He pursued teaching as a career which took him from Cornell, Iowa to Cromwell, MN, and finally to Coon Rapids Jr. High. He coached thousands of athletes in a variety of sports. He treasured going back to the school reunions and being re-united with the young men that he so greatly influenced in a positive manner. He was a charter member of Olive Branch Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids and served for many years as a church elder and usher. After his move to New Brighton, he attended Redeemer Lutheran Church. Funeral service Monday, 11 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church 61 Mississippi St. NE, Fridley, MN. Visitation Sunday, 5-8 PM at Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd., Coon Rapids, MN.
