Alice Marie Sanoden

Alice was born in China on January 8, 1927 where she lived for the first 10 years of her life with her missionary parents. She graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. She married Russell Sanoden on September 10, 1947. They went as missionaries to post war Japan in 1952 sponsored by the American Lutheran Church where they lived for 36 years before retiring in St. Paul. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Sanoden; parents, Palmer and Adelia Anderson; sisters, Carol Anderson, and Grace Huus; and brother, Wilfred Anderson. She is survived by her children, Kathryn (William) Pearson, James Sanoden, Marcia Sanoden, Robert (Laurie) Sanoden; her grandsons, Jesse (Angela), Sam (Emily), Micah (Linnea); and eight great-grandchildren. In Japan, Alice lived with Russ and family first in post-war Tokyo, then Nagoya, then Yugawara, then Shizuoka and ending their ministry in Miyazaki on the island of Kyushu, before retiring in St. Paul. Alice loved music, and she used what she learned from her minor in music at Concordia College her whole life. She was the organist in many of the churches they served and she advised many singing groups. In retirement, she accompanied Russ when he performed at nursing homes, transposing and tweaking the music to fit him. She was truly "the wind beneath his wings." Alice was also an accomplished editor, using again her college English major in helping Japanese people perfect their articles and theses for publication. In addition, she wrote curriculum that she used in teaching English to fit the varied age groups of Japanese students that she taught. There is a small parking lot accessible by a one way street that runs parallel to Midway Parkway on the South side, enter from Pascal Street. The chapel entrance is located in the complex South of the Heritage apartments, one can swing through the parking lot to drop off passengers before finding parking along Midway Parkway or along streets in the neighborhood.
