Alice Jane Hertig

JANE HERTIG Alice "Jane" Hertig passed on peacefully in her sleep at age 92 on September 17, 2022. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Dave and Maud Martin, and was called Jane from birth. She was already amazing at a young age as she was a child prodigy pianist. Invited by the Atchinson Symphony Orchestra at age 11 to accompany them, she vividly remembers being in the middle of a softball game with the neighborhood kids, when her Mom picked her up, put her in a black dress and took her to the performance. When she left home to study at Macalester College in St. Paul, she had a 15 minute weekly radio show where she performed various songs on the college radio station. She later graduated with a double major in French and Spanish and a minor in music. As a teenager, she was very proud to be a good swimmer. She was the first female lifeguard on Lake Minnetonka, and taught private swimming lessons. In college, she even performed with a synchronized swimming team. She married the love of her life, Bud Hertig in 1951 and enthusiastically raised their 5 children. She attended countless baseball and hockey games, and played piano accompaniment for the Grace Lutheran children's choir directed by Bud for 13 years. As the children began to leave for college, she became a self-taught nutritionist, lecturing for Weight Watchers for 9 years, and then owning and operating two Diet Center franchises. She eventually wrote her own weight loss program called Creative Weight Control. Always active in the Republican party, she was a delegate to the State Convention, and state representatives and senators were constantly at the house enlisting her support. She was a strong believer in grass roots politics, and frequently said "unless you get involved, you have no right to complain!" She is survived by her five children and their spouses; Judy and Steve Nordseth, Dave and Carol Hertig, Paul and Young Hertig, Joe and Janet Hertig, and Dan and Amanda Hertig and her sister Mary Kozlov. She also has 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren who adore her. Jane's Memorial Service will be Monday, October 10th @ 11:00 AM with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at Washburn-McReavy-Eden Prairie Chapel, 7625 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie, MN.
