William Jacobs

Jacobs, William Frisch Died one month shy of his 90th birthday on July 18, surrounded by his family in Edina, MN. Bill was born on August 25, 1920 in Danville, PA, the second of three children born to Capt. George Frisch Jacobs and Florence Price Jacobs. Bill attended grade school and high school in New Rochelle, NY and later attended the Suffolk Academy in Connecticut. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1942. That same year, on August 16, Bill married Betty Williford before heading to the Pacific theater to serve his country in World War II. He was discharged from the Navy in 1947 with a rank of Lieutenant and soon moved to Minnesota where he spent most of his life. He was employed in the field of manufacturing for 40 years, culminating with a long tenure as President of MacKay Envelope Company in Minneapolis, MN. Bill and Betty had five children during this time, and they were a source of great joy in his life. Betty died in 1982, leaving a void to be filled. In 1986 Bill married Janie Bennett. The two of them spent 24 wonderful years together before his death. Janie and Bill shared their love, their families, and their many great friendships with each other. Bill was a longtime member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, taught Sunday school, and was active in Cursillo. He has been attending Colonial Church since his marriage to Janie. Bill's favorite activity, aside from spending time with his family, was playing golf. He was a member of The Minikahda Club for 50 years where he served as President. His golf career included two holes-in-one. Bill also loved to travel with family and good friends. In recent years he and Janie spent their winters in Naples, FL, playing golf, enjoying sunset walks on the beach, and entertaining a steady stream of family and friends who came to visit. They spent many summer weekends at Janie's cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin. Music was also a big part of his life, from trying to master the French horn in his youth, to years attending the Minnesota Symphony. He was a longtime member and regular attendee of the Ham and Eggs Club. He was also a member of the Suburban GYRO Club of Minneapolis. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Betty, and by his two brothers, Thomas and John. He is survived by his loving wife, Janie, and by his five children, William, Donald (Jill Julsrud), Cathryn Caplan, all of Minneapolis, Annie Caulkins (Tom) of Hillsborough, NC, and Douglas (Roberta) of North Branch, MN, and by his stepchildren Frank Bennett (Carol) and Ann White (John). He is also survived by grandchildren Rachel Lyons (Tim), Eli Kovick (Amy), Kelly Borchers (Pete), Patrick Jacobs, Michael Caplan, Andrew Caplan, Sarah Jacobs, Michael Krueser, Jenny Krueser- Peterson (Timothy), and his step- grandchildren Georgiana White, Bennett White, Ellie White, Annie White, Charles Bennett, Thomas Bennett, and Christopher Bennett, as well as ten great-grandchildren. The family wants to pay special thanks to the staff and wonderful caregivers at Sunrise of Edina where Bill spent his final three months, and also to the medical, nursing, and hospice staff of Fairview-Southdale hospital for Bill's excellent care during his last week. Memorial gifts in Bill's name can be made to the Alzheimer's Association (4550 W. 77th St., Suite 200, Edina, MN 55435) or to the charity of the donor's choosing. A memorial service in celebration of Bill's life will be held at 1 PM, Friday, July 23 at Colonial Church of Edina, 6200 Colonial Way, Edina, MN. Visitation 1 hour prior to the service at church.
